November marks the 30th anniversary of the cult film Home Alone, released in 1990. The creator of the original story, Chris Columbus, is best known for such films as Mrs. Doubtfire and the first two parts of Harry Potter. Although he achieved success in the 1980s as a screenwriter of the much-loved films Gremlins and The Goonies, his first blockbuster as a director was Home Alone, which became the highest-grossing film released in 1990, grossing US 285 million dollars, a number previously unheard of for a family comedy. Two years later, his own film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York grossed $173.5 million at the box office. The films were released by 20th Century Fox, but when Disney bought Fox in 2019, it secured the rights to the Home Alone franchise, and now Disney+ is ripe for a new installment on its streaming service.

Interesting facts

  • The first film was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the "Highest Box Office Comedy", grossing $477 million worldwide.
  • In Poland, this film is considered a traditional Christmas film. It has been broadcast on national television during the Christmas season every year since 1990. In 2011, the film aired on December 23, reaching over five million viewers, making it the most popular show broadcast during the Christmas season in Poland.
  • Home Alone 2: Lost in New York grossed $359M worldwide on a $20M budget
  • Macaulay Culkin received $4,500,000 for his role in this film, the highest salary ever for an 11-year-old (at the time of filming) child actor.
  • In the second part there was a scene with the current US President Donald Trump. His appearance lasts only a few seconds in the scene at the Plaza Hotel, where he helps Kevin find his way.
  • According to director Chris Columbus, Trump gave an ultimatum: either there will be a scene with him in the film, or he will not give permission to shoot at the Plaza.

Movie restart

A Home Alone reboot was announced last year. As reported, the story will center around a new hero - a child named Max, played by Archie Yates (known for "Jojo Rabbit"), as well as featuring comedy stars Ellie Kemper ("The Office", "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt") and Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw). The production of the new version was stopped duringof the COVID-19 lockdown, but that didn't stop Disney from announcing on Saturday Night Live that filming and script work is ongoing. New Home Alone will be directed by Dan Mather (Dirty Grandpa).

A reboot is not necessary, Chris Columbus said in a new interview with Business Insider marking the 30th anniversary of Home Alone. He said that he was not even invited to participate in the new project:

“No one has contacted me about this, and from what I understand, this is a waste of time. What's the point? I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't remake films that have lasted as long as Home Alone. You will not be able to create "lightning in a bottle" again. Try to make something of your own. Even if you fail miserably, at least you will come up with something original.”

Chris Columbus himself was subjected to similar criticism at one time: "Even I myself can be blamed for this in Home Alone 2," he admitted. “This film is basically a remake of the first part. Should it exist? Yes, because some of the scenes make me laugh, but I don't think it needs to be repeated again.”

There is a lot of truth in the words of Chris Columbus. If a movie is already considered perfect and is still being watched, the remastered version will always pale in comparison to the original. Some of the best remakes are movies where the story idea was great, but the execution was either bad or just looked morally wrong.obsolete by modern standards.

Will there be an adult version of Home Alone?

Chris also commented on another Ryan Reynolds version of the film, tentatively titled "Stoned Alone" in development:

"God knows what it's going to be - a more stoned version of Home Alone?" Listen, just have fun. I like to feel that something new is being done. Life is short."

You can assume that now that Home Alone is part of the Disney family, this version is unlikely to develop.
