The director's personal renaissance
Founder of the Dogma 95 movement, one of von Trier's close associates became famous for his shocking drama Triumph (1998), after which he had a creative crisis. The next surreal film drama, All About Love, went unnoticed, the parable Dear Wendy flopped at the box office, and the comedy Homecoming received devastating reviews. Then Thomas Vinterberg decided to turn to the origins and create in the familiar territory - in the genre of psychological drama. He enlisted the help of the talented screenwriter Tobias Lindholm and found himself again."Submarino" and the film "Hunt" marked the director's personal renaissance. In the 2012 project, in a team with the main actor of his generation in Scandinavia, Mads Mikkelsen, he raises the social drama of the opposition of the individual to society to an extraordinary level. A lie that has grown into a real war is not the philosophy of Dogma-95.
Creation idea
Many viewers in the reviews of the film "The Hunt" focus on the history of the creation of the project. Immediately after the triumph of Celebration, Winterberg received many scripts based on stories of family tragedies and dramas. One day he met with a Danish psychologist he knew, who introduced the director to several interesting cases from his archive. All of them described patients' fantasies that replaced real memories. According to the expert, anyone could make a curious film. However, then Thomas Vinterberg did not take advantage of the opportunity.
A dozen years later, after a divorce from his missus, the director was reviewing the folder provided by the psychologist and discovered an amazing case. Vinterberg became interested in how in the unstable psyche of a child, under the influence of various circumstances, false memories of events that never happened can form.
Storyline
Forty-year-old local kindergarten teacher Lucas (M. Mikkelsen) has just begun to recover from the scandalous divorce proceedings. His personal life began to stabilize, there wereromantic relationship with a sweet emigrant Nadya (A. Rapaport), the son (L. Vogelstrem) decided to move and live with his father. And then everything collapsed overnight after being accused of pedophilia. Sad and lonely for a long time, the man became the object of attention of the five-year-old kindergarten beauty Clara (A. Wedderkopp), the daughter of a neighbor and good friend Theo (T. Larsen). Offended by the lack of a proper reaction to the “valentine” and the rejected attempt at a kiss, the girl tells the teacher about the piquant events that allegedly took place, the script of which she spied on her older brother’s laptop. Soon, the director with a connected psychologist extract information from the girl, which they interpret as an attempt at sexual contact. Confidential information is instantly distributed throughout the Danish town. Lucas' life is turning into a living hell.
Yes, afterward the little girl admits her lie, and the public calms down. But the ending of the tape is still tragic. Viewers in the reviews of the ending of the film The Hunt (2012) call it predictably tragic.
In comparison
Most of the critics in reviews of the film "The Hunt" call the project the antithesis of "Celebration". In this film, the son exposed his respected father, accusing him of pedophilia during the celebration of the anniversary. In The Hunt, a decent man, whose innocence the viewer is convinced from the first frames, is forced to fight the prejudices that flourish in society. He is defeated, his reputation is irretrievably ruined not by a misdemeanor, but by a false accusation. Moreover, hisblamed the child - the "shrine" of the liberal European society, Vinterberg turning into deranged "witch hunters". The creators drew an extremely unpleasant group portrait of European residents, frightened by pedophilia, cases of which really exist, but are not perceived reflexively, are forced out somewhere to the periphery of consciousness.
Actor casting
In the film "The Hunt" (2012), the actors involved in the production of the tape made up a unique ensemble. However, Mads Mikkelsen stands out among other performers, who played the role of an outcast, resisting unfair persecution with the last of his strength. For the recognized Danish sex symbol, such a difficult role was a real gift, allowing him to demonstrate all the experience and acting talent. The most deserving film star of Danish cinema of her generation, of course, helped the director's skill to reach a higher level. Filmmakers in their reviews of the film "The Hunt" emphasize that in cinema, the declarativeness and conventionality of early works have been replaced by the credibility and realism of a mature artist.
Among other performers, Thomas Bo Larsen stands out in the image of Theo, the father of the sly baby, Alexandra Rapaport, who played Nadia, and Lasse Vogelström, who embodied the image of Markus, the son of the protagonist.
Criticism
Many viewers called "The Hunt" the best director's work since "Celebration". The director shot both masterpieces in an almost documentary manner to enhance the impression of believability.happening.
Authors-contributors of reputable print publications compare Vinterberg's brainchild with the French drama "Guilt" and the Danish "The Accused" in terms of the topicality of the topics covered.
A separate place in the positive reviews and reviews of observers from among the audience is the acting work of Mads Mikkelsen. According to most, the picture moves largely due to his amazing reincarnation. Audiences tirelessly praise the utterly devastated character, brilliantly played by a movie star. Formerly known for his roles as cruel and icy characters, the actor in The Hunt did a great job as a gentle man trapped.
Reviews of psychologists The film "Hunt" (2012) is highly recommended for viewing. Experts point out that such a ridiculous story can happen to anyone. The picture emphasizes the defenselessness of the layman in modern society. No matter how civilized it may be, primitive instincts will still prevail, and then the “hunt” will really begin. Domestic experts in the field of psychology consider the tape a useful and timely antidote necessary for Russian society, gripped by similar phobias.
