"Oscar" - for filmmakers, Nobel Prize - for scientists, Pulitzer Prize - for journalists, musicians, writers. Architects at all times also received awards. It was the prestigious Pritzker Prize.
History
This world's top award has become the best proof of an architect's success. Its presentation began in 1979, and the founder of this award was the millionaire Jay A. Pritzker. With his wife, they felt that the lack of architects among the Nobel Prize winners was a flagrant injustice. It was decided to create their own world award, which architects from all over the world would strive to get.
Thirty-seven architects have already received their awards for their great talent, gift and creative aspirations. Each of them did not deviate from their personal creative canons, thereby making an extraordinary contribution to world architecture, leaving behind bright and memorable artistic structures.
Award and ceremony
Pritzker Prize winners have received all-time commemorative bronze medallions. They are engraved with the main words that should characterize the work.winner: "Strength. Benefit. The beauty". In addition, each of the winners was required to receive a financial award of one hundred thousand dollars.
Each ceremony is always held in the best traditions of the "Oscar" or the Nobel Prize. Winners of the Pritzker Prize gather in the ceremonial hall, waiting for their own victory. In general, even being a nominee for this award is an honor. This motivates every creator to take another step towards victory that will be remembered by the whole world.
The Pritzker Family
The American millionaires who allowed and rewarded architects from all over the world are now one of the we althiest families of the 20th century. It is worth noting that almost every member of this huge family is now on the Forbes list.
The life of their family is shrouded in secrets. There is a legend that at one time the founder of the dynasty fled from Ukraine during the Jewish pogroms. He arrived in America without money. Everything he could earn, he first of all invested in studying at the Faculty of Law, after which he was already able to organize a law office.
After getting on his feet, Pritzker started buying real estate, and his adult sons continued his father's business. So, it turned out that architecture is much more important than advocacy. Today, Thomas Pritzker is the president of the Hyatt Foundation, which has a worldwide hospitality business.
Laureates
Pritzker Prize Winners of All Time have been amazing every year with theirwork in the field of architecture. They raised ostentatious buildings that became mundane structures: fire stations, stadiums, residential buildings or business centers.
Each of the nominees and laureates created not just an unusual architectural structure. Each of them did something ergonomic, comfortable, spacious and cozy. Every year, the Pritzker Prize was awarded to architects from anywhere in the world, of any ideology, nationality and political views.
The largest number of architectural award winners among citizens of the USA, Japan, Great Britain. In 2012, Chinese architect Wang Shu was awarded for the first time. In 2004, a woman, Zaha Hadid, became the first laureate.
2016
Usually the award ceremony takes place in March. Cities are chosen differently, depending on the features of architecture. The award has already been held in Versailles, Jerusalem, Bilbao, Prague, St. Petersburg and other architectural masterpiece cities.
This year, the nominees were famous architects Peter Eisenman with the Berlin "Memorial to the Annihilated Jews of Europe", David Chipperfield with the Folkwang Museum and others. The winner was 48-year-old Chilean Alejandro Aravena.
The members of the jury pointed out, first of all, that for his work there was never a financial component in the privilege. The main feature is guest care, low energy consumption, and, most importantly, disaster relief.
Araven's famous works became campusCatholic University. The building is made of a cubic shape, it has 14 floors, monolithic. For all its heavy appearance, inside it is very light and friendly. This is all because Aravena took care of the openings in the facade, which allowed us to reduce energy costs by 2/3.
Zaha Hadid's attempts
Of course, every award-winning architect deserves attention. But the first woman to win in 2004 was Zaha Hadid. The Pritzker Prize was the impetus for the creative accomplishments of a woman. Before receiving the prize, she had only a few regular projects in her arsenal.
The victory was a real motivation for her, which led her architectural firm to a colossal amount of work done. Already after the award, in one decade, 950 projects were created under the leadership of Hadid. They were scattered across 44 countries of the world.
The first failed project Zaha created in 1982 and won her first competition with it. The sports club at the top of the mountain interested many specialists. But the reason for the refusal of construction was political friction, which influenced the future fate of the woman. She returned to London and opened an office.
Further attempts to return to architecture were rather timid and uncertain. The fire station, the never-built Cardiff opera house, the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art. This building was the last project before the award, which divided her life into "before and after." The Pritzker Prize was presented at the Hermitage. In St. Petersburg, a woman received the covetedbronze medal and financial support for future projects.
And now, already in 2014, Zaha opened her new building in Hong Kong, which looked like either a rock or a spaceship. This Technology University Innovation Tower has become like a "voice" from the future. A piece that was torn out of there and inserted here, into an imperfect world. Despite the fact that Hong Kong became the destroyer of her talent in the distant 1980s, now it is her admirer and place for creative solutions. March 31, 2016 Hadid overtook a heart attack, which became her death sentence.
Future projects
The world needed an architecture award. For many, the Pritzker Prize has become not only a recognition of their talent, but also the best motivation for creating great projects. Norman Foster from the UK received the award in 1999. He became famous thanks to the London skyscraper-"cucumber". Now, since 2014, his project in Pennsylvania has been implemented. By 2017, a tower with a height of 336 meters and 60 floors should be built.
In 2008, French architect Jean Nouvel received the award. His extraordinary solutions and the expansion of public consciousness have long been revered by famous architects, so the award seemed belated. Nevertheless, it was impossible not to reward Nouvel. His projects were amazing: residential buildings, public buildings, shopping malls, cultural institutions, various social facilities and much more. Behind the backNouvel - a huge number of technologically flawless objects.
Now Nouvel is working on the construction of two museums in Rio de Geneiro and Tokyo, the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, the entertainment centers of Dubai and Kuwait and a couple of skyscrapers in New York and Paris.
The Pritzker Prize has become an assistant in the development of a future career for many. The laureates who have survived to this day are now involved in major projects that will undoubtedly be able to conquer every person.
