Horror under the conditional name "trap for tourists" has long stood out in a special category, the canons of which have not changed for many years: a group of naive youth will have to climb into the wilderness, where there is no mobile connection and are destined to die at the hands of maniacs, cannibals, local gopniks or mutants.
Among such examples of the genre there are masterpieces permeated with psychologism, there are also unfortunate failures. At the same time, the fairly stamped formula does not lose its popularity among filmmakers and demand among the audience. One of the brightest representatives of the subgenre is the project of director Jaume Collet-Serra "House of Wax". Films similar to the announced tape appear in the world box office regularly.
Remake of remake
Having gained experience in adapting Japanese horror films, Hollywood filmmakers turned their attention to their own old films. The film "House of Wax" (2005) is a remake of the remake,no matter how messy it may sound. And all because the brainchild of Andre De Toth, who created the Wax Museum in 1953, which inspired Collet-Serra, is a remake of the tape "The Secret of the Wax Museum", released in 1933.
In order to please the fashion for slashers, in which maniacs shred the youth, the Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra decided to revive the forgotten plot in a new interpretation. He combined the themes of wax figures with the typical components of a slasher film. In the center of the story, a group of young people, on their way to a football match, go astray and get into trouble. The most impressive thing in the tape, according to viewers, is the entourage - an abandoned provincial town with empty dwellings and a small church filled with wax figures. The genre of the film "House of Wax" is horror, its IMDb rating: 5.30.
The project has polar reviews and ratings among viewers and film experts. The tape was awarded the Teen Choice Awards (2005) as the "best horror film" and at the same time received the "Golden Raspberry". Such a diverse reception did not stop filmmakers who continue to release similar projects.
Full meta-horror
The list of films similar to "House of Wax" opens the horror film directed by Drew Goddard "The Cabin in the Woods" (2011). The story begins with an acquaintance with a group of students who went to the wilderness for the weekend. In a forest hut lost in a thicket, they find a diary, the pages of which are covered with ominous scribbles in Latin. Naturally, the characters begin to read it - andhorror begins.
Many reviewers in the reviews focused on the similarity of the plot of Drew Goddard's project with the cult "Evil Dead". However, the plot of the tape is not only a slasher, it is also a detective story in which the secret is revealed gradually and rather slowly. The film received positive reviews from film critics and an IMDb rating of 7.00. The audience was delighted with the originality and unpredictability of the story.

Movies like "House of Wax" usually take place in empty spaces, abandoned cities or impenetrable thickets of forest. For example, in Rob Schmidt's Wrong Turn, young Americans wander through the thickets of West Virginia. Soon they become the object of hunting by local residents: crazy and wild mutant brothers.
As many movie pundits have pointed out, Schmidt didn't try to be original, but the atrocities of his antagonists provided the material from which a long-running five-episode franchise developed. Their authors also donated a bus with criminals and participants in a reality show and visitors to a costumed open air.
The original film Wrong Turn has an IMDb rating of 6.10, the sequels have many times less. Not surprisingly, all parts of the sequel were released immediately on DVD. But the first film still looks worthy, remaining a product of the must-see category for fans of the genre.
Originals and remakes
ManyHollywood authors do not hide the fact that when creating tapes they are inspired by cases from real life. For example, Toub Hooper wrote his painting The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) under the impression of the trial of the necrophilic Ed Gein, who was fond of sewing clothes from the skin of his victims. Therefore, his provincial villain puts on, instead of a mask, the faces cut off from his victims, and if strangers encroach on his territory, he arm himself with a chainsaw and call his relatives for help.
The 1974 project, banned in many countries, refers to films similar to "House of Wax", and Leatherface is one of the prominent movie maniacs in the history of the film industry. Not surprisingly, several optional sequels have since been released. But the dilogy-reboot turned out to be powerful. And it seems that Hollywood is clearly not going to stop there. Tobe Hooper's tape has an IMDb rating of 7.50 and overwhelmingly positive reviews, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D" and the 2017 film sub titled "Leatherface" both have a lower rating and modest reviews.
From the same series
A similar story, with numerous sequels and remakes, is linked to the 1977 film The Hills Have Eyes, directed and written by Wes Craven. In the center of the story is the Carter family, traveling across America and faced with mutant cannibals. Despite the fact that the project was awarded the Critics' Prize of the Sitges Festival, its IMDb rating is: 6.40.
In 2006, French film director Alexandre Azha madea remake of the picture, which provoked a hurricane of criticism and was awarded the same rating position at 6.40. The fact that Wes Craven solidified and cemented the trend set by the Texas Massacre is beyond doubt.
There's also a sequel from director Martin Wise, which was devastated by critics. At the same time, the appearance of sequels or a reboot is quite possible, as long as the viewer pays to view, the eyes of the hills will not change.
Movies similar to House of Wax
In this category, it would be useful to mention no less interesting examples of the genre like "Hostel" (2005), where a hostel in one of the countries of Eastern Europe acts as a death trap. This modestly budgeted film received huge box office receipts and earned a significant share of compliments from critics. The two subsequent sequels failed to match the success of the original one bit.
Designed with taste by debutant Kim Shapiron, Shaitan (2006) explores what childishness, youth strolling through the French suburbs and encountering a sinister gardener can lead to. The picture was created with the support of Vincent Cassel, who produced the tape and played one of the main roles.
Also, fans of the genre can be safely recommended to watch the films "Wolf Pit", "Turistas", "Border" and "Forbidden Zone".
