"Snuffbox" - the theater of the famous Oleg Tabakov

On March 1, 1987, in one of the Moscow basements on Chaplygina Street (not far from the Chistye Prudy metro station), the famous Snuffbox opened - a theater led by the People's Artist of the USSR, winner of many various Russian, Soviet and foreign awards and Oleg Tabakov awards.

I must say that the house in which the "Snuffbox" was located was considered elite. Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Maxim Gorky once met in this famous house. Famous personalities lived in it - polar explorer Krenkel, People's Commissar of the NKVD Yezhov, mathematician Chaplygin. And in 1977, the "Studio of Young Actors" under the leadership of Tabakov was located here.

Sergey Bezrukov even created his own project in 2010. And before that, he had been an actor in the Snuffbox Theater for a long time.

Oleg Tabakov recently celebrated his 80th birthday. History of the theater

The building of the former coal warehouse on Chaplygina Street was given to Oleg Tabakov back in 1977. Then he, with the actors who helped him - students - cleared it and put it in order.

Tabakov's group of young actors appeared back in 1974. Oleg Tabakov worked with them as with real students of a theater university. He taught classes in acting, stage movement, etc. Also, young students were taught by legendary actors - V. S. Vysotsky, K. Raikin, V. Kataev and many others. After 2 years, eight of the most talented young people were invited by Oleg Pavlovich Tabakov to his course at GITIS. Among them was today's popular actor Andrey Smolyakov.

Premier in the "basement"

In 1978, the premiere performance based on the play by A. Kazantsev "In the spring I will return to you" took place in the "basement". Thanks to the talented play of students and the leadership of Oleg Pavlovich Tabakov, the "basement" soon became known throughout the country, earned the attention and recognition of the audience. The best journalists and critics of that time wrote about the theater.

The hard times came later. The program "Cultivation of acting professionalism" proposed by Tabakov was recognized as extremely "non-innovative". The theater did not receive official recognition from the state, and the actors were forced to work elsewhere. But still they gathered in the "basement" at night, rehearsed plays and even staged performances.

Try number two

In 1986, having gone through a period of "ban on the profession", the "basement" managed to get the official status of the theater. ATIn 1987, the reconstruction of the building was completed and the "Snuffbox" was opened. The Tabakov Theater is fully operational.

Their first performance "Armchair" was already bold and provocative. The hero of the play is a talented young man who spends his life serving the district committee of the Komsomol. A fresh look at things, talent, high professionalism - this has always distinguished "Snuffbox".

The theater quickly began touring and collecting applause not only at home, but also abroad. The actors went on tour in Italy, Hungary, Japan, Germany, France, Israel. Every year the theater, despite the skeptical attitude of critics, gained more and more love from the audience. On the days of advance ticket sales, queues of those wishing to get to the performance stand from Kamergersky Lane to Dmitrovka. The best performances were awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation and the Golden Mask.

The troupe constantly takes part in major international competitions and festivals.
