White Walkers are a separate race invented by George R. R. Martin in his book A Song of Ice and Fire. They lived in the north of Westeros beyond the Great Wall. Until a certain time, people believed that they were the walking dead, and in fact they are fictional fairy-tale characters.

Who is this?

White walkers, whose photos confirm some resemblance to humans, are a separate likeness of the human race. The race belongs to the humanoid, which is confirmed more than once in the book and in its filmed version of the series.

The resemblance is only superficial. In fact, they are somewhat taller than their prototypes (humans), the skin on the face and the whole body is very light with a bluish tint, and the hair is white. Separately, it should be said about the eyes - in the dark they glow blue.

Separately, it should be said about the magical abilities that the White Walkers possessed. The ability to make warriors out of dead people allowed them to quickly increase their ranks. That is why people had a custom to burn the corpses of the dead.

"Winter is coming" - this phrase was often exchangedcharacters in the book, without even thinking about its true meaning. "Dead" can only appear with the advent of cold weather and at night, and the winter in the kingdom lasts a very long time.

Origin (according to the author)

George Martin explained their origin this way: “White Walkers are seeds. According to the mythology of the Celts, this is a reasonable race that lived on Earth before the advent of man, who eventually replaced them. Gradually they were almost forgotten, but mythology told about their inhuman abilities. The life of a white walker (sid) has 1.5-2 thousand years, which strikingly distinguishes it from a person. Thus, according to legends and traditions, they were presented as a deity.”

It was from this image that the author wrote about his "evil spirits", which for several thousand years have not been seen by any living person living within the wall. And all the references came down to the intimidation of young children.

Hierarchy

The race of ghouls has its master, whom they obey unquestioningly. This is clearly seen during the eighth episode of the show's fifth season, in which the Others attack Hardhome. At the moment when Jon Snow came to convince the wildlings to move beyond the Wall, but he has to repel the attack of the army of others. Some time after the start of the fight, he sees a group of dead children turned into others and fighting against people. This makes a huge impression on him.

Human legends said that the leader of the White Walkers was the Great Other, his name was forbidden to be spoken aloud, so over time itforgotten. Some simply called him the Lord of Darkness, Ice Soul, God of Night and Terror. It is he who resuscitates dead people, turning them into wights, ready to serve the darkness and do the will of the white walkers.

Thus, we can divide the race into three categories:

  • Leader.
  • White Walkers.
  • Which (ghouls).

Children

Many people wonder why the white walkers need the babies that Craster constantly sacrificed to the Lord of Darkness? Since neither the author nor the screenwriters answered this question, two independent versions can be distinguished:

  • This is how the real White Walkers were replenished, loyal to their master, who turned them into their own kind.
  • The walker who carried off the human baby did it to make a sacrifice. Moreover, the goal is not the baby's body, but the fact that this creature is alive, it breathes, and its heart beats.

History

In the pages of a book about how the White Walkers came to be, Martin says in the words of old Nan: “This is the thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He was not afraid of anything and that was his vice. One day, from the Wall, the lord saw a beautiful girl with white skin, blue eyes and an icy body. He immediately fell in love with her and brought her to the Nightfort, making him his queen. Over time, the lord was transformed, began to make sacrifices to others and changed his appearance with the advent of twilight. This went on until one ofStarkov and Jaromun of the wildlings did not overthrow his reign. Then he left the wall and hid in the vast expanses of the north, vowing revenge.

That's how old Nan told the tale to little Bran, naming the thirteenth Lord Stark of Winterfell.

Deviations from the book

Written by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, there are several significant deviations regarding the walkers that have nothing to do with the plot of Martin's books. Here are some of them:

  • In the film, Sem meets a group of ghouls on foot and on horseback. The book says that the Wights are black and the walkers are white. In addition, the former do not have intelligence and are not able to think, only unquestioningly execute commands. At the end of the first season, they lay out a circle from the corpses of the wildlings (by the way, the meaning of this remains unrevealed).
  • Whichs are clumsy and slow - shots from the film completely refute what was written. The ghouls are very fast, have close combat skills, and are reasonable.
  • Walkers appear only in the book "A Dance with Dragons", before that there was practically no mention of them. In the series, the viewer can first see them at the end of the first season.
  • White Walkers, photographed in daylight, refute what Martin wrote in the book. He specifically said that they only appear at nightfall and disappear at dawn.

How White Walkers Came to Be

In future seasons and books, we expect the following development of the plot related toundead: a huge army of white walkers will soon reach the inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms, having crossed the Wall. That's when the great battle will begin. Moreover, all the pluses are on the side of others, since most people have never even heard of their existence and are not able to stand up for themselves.
