In 2002, the television series Firefly was released. Of the planned 14 episodes, only 11 were shown. The reason was the low viewing rating, according to the Fox television company. Despite this, Firefly (the original title of the picture) has received the status of a cult series. In 2005, thanks to numerous requests from fans of the series, a feature-length film was shot, continuing and supplementing the events of Firefly - Mission Serenity.

History of Creation

When Fox refused to air Firefly after episode 11, its director Joss Whedon tried to get his offspring on other channels, but was refused everywhere. For some, the series was not suitable for the genre, for others - for the target audience. Then Whedon had the idea to create a full-length picture based on Firefly. The actors agreed to the shooting. "Mission Serenity" (as the film was later called) began to turn from a dream into reality.

For the first time, Whedon spoke about the desire to shoot a full-length film based on his own series in 2003. Fans of Firefly did not have to wait long - already in September 2003, the director signed a contract with Universal Pictures and beganworking on a painting. The cast of "Mission Serenity" has moved from the series to the new film without changing their cast.

The problem remained the small budget of the picture - 93 million dollars by the standards of modern blockbusters, the amount is simply miserable. This is the reason why the film has quite a few special effects - only about 400 scenes.

Joss Whedon liked the starship from the TV series, so he wanted to use it in the feature film as well. To do this, the smugglers' spaceship needed to be detailed. Ventilation shafts, rivets, supports, light sources were added to the layout. Much the same was done to the other ships, the Death Eater starships and the Alliance armadas.

Storyline

Actors ("Serenity Mission"), so beloved by the audience, played a team of smugglers led by Captain Mel Reynolds in the film.

The action in the picture takes place in the distant future. Humanity moved to a new star system, where the Alliance was formed. He forcibly subjugated many territories, but not everyone liked his power. Malcolm Reynolds and other members of his crew were part of a failed attempt by the Outer Worlds to resist the Alliance. Having lost the war, they are forced to survive on the outskirts of the galaxy and engage in cargo transportation. Sometimes the Serenity team also works as a smuggler.

On one of the planets, the ship picks up two passengers:Dr. Simon with younger sister River. As it turns out later, the girl has a telepathic gift. Her brother stole her from the Alliance's secret lab, where she was being experimented on. As a result, River is in an unstable state and can be dangerous. A government agent is on the trail of the fugitives.

After the incident at the bar, when River got out of control, Captain Reynolds decided to solve the mystery related to the girl. To do this, Serenity is sent to the planet Miranda, which is dangerously close to the territory controlled by the Death Eaters - cannibal barbarians.

Differences between a full-length picture and a series

The film almost to the smallest detail repeats the story told in "Firefly". Dialogues and key sequences were cut to a minimum to keep within the chronometers. I had to cut out some minor lines from the picture. The director limited himself to a story about the fate of Simon and River, who infiltrated Serenity in an attempt to hide from Alliance agents.

"Mission Serenity" - a picture with a difficult fate. Her original series Firefly was pulled from television due to low ratings. But it was thanks to the reaction of fans that Universal Pictures and director Joss Whedon were able to make a feature-length film based on the series, which today has received cult status.
