Back in 1923, the first drama club was founded in the center of the republic. He acted within the framework of the Red Udmurt club. After outstanding talents came there, the question arose of creating an independent theater. Promising actors wanted to perform in front of a large audience.

Therefore, on the initiative of the students of the circle and third-party theatergoers, in 1931 the Udmurt professional theater arose. The beginning was laid by the production of "The Vala River Noises", which was masterfully directed by K. A. Lozhkin. The creator of the play was a member of the "Red Udmurt" - writer I. G. Gavrilov, who continued to work for the benefit of the theater for another 40 years.

The rapid development of the cultural life of the national theater in Izhevsk began after it was given the status of a state theater. This happened in 1935, the theater received the right to stage works of world classics, as well as to glorify their wards. For example, M. Konovalova and A. Saratov.

At the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, a lot of workers were required, so part of the theater staff was sent to the front, as well as to rear enterprises.
