Despite the fact that the work itself is not too big and is read in one breath, sometimes it becomes necessary to get acquainted with the contents of the novel "St. John's Wort" in just half an hour. Brief summary in this situation is the best option. So let's get started!
What is worth knowing about the author?
Before you start studying this work, you should find out who James Fenimore Cooper is. "St. John's wort", a brief summary of which will now be considered, is one of the many novels of this outstanding creator. Of course, in order to create such informative books, you yourself need to be at least an intelligent and educated person.
That's exactly what Cooper was, who, as the son of a judge, graduated from high school successfully enough to enter Yale University. True, the thirst for adventure, which was so characteristic of the heroes of the novel, was not alien to the writer himself. That's probably why he didn't graduate from Yale. Instead, Cooper went to serve in the Navy. Well, thanks in large part to this, we can readtoday stunningly realistic descriptions of the nature of Lake Ontario.
And James began to write … under the influence of chance! More precisely, his wife, Delana. It was to her that her husband read aloud when he noticed that he could write just as well, and this would not cause any difficulties at all. The wife drew attention to a fleeting statement, so Cooper had to prove his words with deeds. Which he did by writing the novel Precaution.
The author worked from 1820 to 1851, until he was crippled by cirrhosis of the liver. In 1841, James F. Cooper wrote Deerslayer, a summary of which only partially introduces the reader to the characters and events. It should be noted that this work in the vastness of the USSR gained amazing popularity, many read it. But it was filmed only in 1990.
James Fenimore Cooper, "St. John's wort" summary
To begin with, it is worth saying that this book is part of a pentalogy, which can be considered a kind of manual on the history of the colonization of North America and the customs of the Indians, as well as their interaction with Europeans. This is what a very brief content can be. "St. John's Wort" is, in fact, a novel that helps to understand that very different people can be friends. And love, loy alty to the word and the ability to overcome obstacles - just what is fundamental in life.
The story begins with the fact that two guys, Harry March and Natty Bambo (he just responded to the name Deerslayer), come out of the forest thickets. In front of them they see a lake that strikes with its beauty. The goal of the young people is the home of Tom Hutter, whose daughterMarch is in love. The girl (Judith), however, does not reciprocate his feelings.
Due to the fact that a military conflict has begun between the French and the British, Thomas, together with March and Bambo, take the ark to a safe place, which the Mingo Indians (they tend to sympathize with the French) can take possession of. The three men also remove two more pirogues away from view. But then Hutter and March come up with the idea to attack the camp, in which at that time only women remained. They know that Bambo won't agree to this, so they do their best to send him away.
The novel St. Bambo can't stay away. He goes on reconnaissance, during which he has to kill an Indian. Before his death, he gives the guy another nickname - Hawkeye (for marksmanship).
Meet Chingachgook
To rescue Hatter and March from captivity, Deerslayer consults with Chingachgook, who is just in these places, seeking to regain his bride, Wa-ta-Wa. Perspicacious and experienced, he says that the best solution is to ransom the men. Thomas' daughters agree without hesitation, because life is the most valuable thing, and outfits and chess, for which the captives are ultimately exchanged, are trifles that can be safely sacrificed.
How did St. John's Wort get captured and what followed?
Freeing his friends, the guy is takenhelp Chingachgook, who cannot leave without his beloved. But in the process of freeing the girl, the brave Hawkeye is captured, allowing Chingachgook and Wah-ta-Wah to escape.
It's no surprise that March and Hutter aren't too eager to take the risk of rescuing Deerslayer from captivity. But then, from an unexpected side, Judith shows herself, who is imbued with sincere sympathy for the guy.
What happens next is much more detailed by Cooper. The St. Here they are ambushed. And if a strong and young March manages to escape, then Thomas dies in an unequal fight, he is scalped. True, before his death, having gathered his last strength, he tells his daughters that he is not their own father.
St. John's wort - parliamentary
The Indians decide that Hawkeye can be useful and send him to negotiate with those in the "ark". But what he must achieve is clearly unfeasible, and this is clear to everyone. At the same time, the young man must return back, regardless of how successful the negotiations will be. Judith, who cares about Bambo, tries to dissuade him, but he refuses the girl's requests. For St. John's Wort, the word is more important than what he feels, what he wants.
And then the book "St. John's wort", a summary of which we are studying, tells about howthat the Hurons, who sent him as a truce, are impressed by his human qualities. As a sign of respect, the guy is offered to marry the widow of the Indian he killed. But given that the woman was very vicious, and even had many children, St. John's wort, to put it mildly, did not like such a proposal.
In connection with the refusal to marry, the brother of his potential wife became angry with him. And in anger he launched a tomahawk at Bambo. The guy dodged the weapon, but threw it back. The result was the death of an Indian. This overwhelms the patience of the Hurons. They decide to break the intractable guy at all costs.
Decoupling: J. F. Cooper, "St. John's Wort"
Summary should be supplemented with the following. The Indians decided to make fun of Hawkeye to their heart's content. To do this, he was tied to a tree and began to exercise in accuracy. The guy was shot so as not to inflict mortal wounds, but at the same time enjoy his fear.
The brave young man did not give them such an opportunity. He didn't even cover his eyes, seeing the shooting aimed at him. He didn't seem to care.
The Indians make a fire in a frenzy. And here Hattie, Judith's sister, who is considered not quite adequate, comes to the rescue. She scatters the wood already taken.
And then Chingachgook suddenly appears from the thicket, who frees Deerslayer, gives him a weapon. But the fight is initially unequal, if not for one "but". Soldiers appear. Their target is the Hurons. Almost the entire tribe perishes. Only in the battle Hattie gets injured. Despite the doctor's help, she dies. Before dying, the girl says a strange phrase about leaving St. John's wort not forever.
Explanation: Rejection of love
And then comes Hawkeye and Judith's explanation. She, having gathered her strength, says that she would like to become the wife of St. John's wort. But he refuses, motivating him by the fact that marriage cannot be happy without mutual love. Did he say it all?
It turns out that St.
Features of the work
In the novel St. In addition, it is in this novel that the veil of mystery is lifted over why St. John's wort became the way we see him in other works of Cooper, and this is very important.
It is also very interesting how the line of love develops. Why did the hunter refuse the girl who so clearly sympathized with him and was truly beautiful? Maybe each of the readers will form their own opinion about this?
Screening: what is it?
During the filming of the Soviet film St. speech in film and book. Also, many viewers noted that the actors were chosen just perfectly, they embodiedexactly those images that were presented while reading the book.
At the same time, the film, like the book, is quite simple, it has no graphics, special effects. But there is something much more important - the ability to touch the soul. And encourage people to become a little better! And also - to think about whether external beauty is so important, or, nevertheless, actions, spiritual qualities are more important.
Instead of a conclusion
This is the summary of the story "St. John's wort" (although it would be more correct, of course, to call it a novel).
