In 1995, the British television series "Pride and Prejudice" was released on movie screens. This was not the first film adaptation of Jane Austen's book, but she was destined to become the most famous, thanks to the role played by Colin Firth. The British Helen Fielding liked the image he created so much that she wrote her own novel, in which she named the main character in his honor - Mark Darcy. In Fielding's interpretation, this character turned out to be no less charming and noble than Miss Austin's.
Mark Darcy ("Bridget Jones's Diary")
This character first appears in Bridget Jones's Diary. Its plot is very reminiscent of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
Mark Darcy, like his famous namesake, is the embodiment of the ideal of a man. He has excellent manners, and besides, he is noble and honest. As a human rights lawyer, he serves onthe benefit of society. However, Mark's generosity is also his Achilles' heel - others often use him for their own purposes.
As in the famous book, Bridget and Mark did not like each other when they first met, but by coincidence they meet again and again at various events.
If Darcy gradually falls in love with the charming plump Jones, then the girl treats him with prejudice. The fact is that her boss, sexy Daniel Cleaver, seeing his old friend's interest in Bridget, lied that Darcy took his bride away.
In reality, Mark Darcy himself was a victim of Cleaver's machinations. He was Mark's wife's lover, which led to a divorce.
It won't be long before Bridget learns the truth about Darcy. Moreover, she manages to convince herself of the merits of Mark from her own experience. After all, as in Austen's novel, the hero saves her family from shame and ruin.
The fate of Bridget and Mark in other books by Helen Fielding
The second novel in the series, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, was published in 1999.
This book has become a modernized version of another Jane Austen novel - Reasoning.
Noble handsome lawyer Mark Darcy in the new work is still irresistible. At first, their relationship with Bridget is just fine. But because of the advice of friends and various books on psychology, the girl begins to doubt her lover. In addition, the fat woman has a rival - Rebecca. This woman goes toa trick to separate lovers.
Trying to heal after breaking up with Mark, Jones and a friend travel to Thailand. Here they meet the charming Jed, who is trying to use them to smuggle drugs. The bastard does not succeed, and he escapes, and the innocent Bridget ends up in jail.
Despite the breakup, Mark helps his ex out. Later, they sort things out and decide never to part again.
In the third novel of the series (Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy), Mark appears only occasionally, and even then in the main character's memories. The fact is that the main man in Bridget's life died, leaving Mrs. Darcy a widow with two children in her arms. Fortunately for his family, he left them a solid legacy.
The absence of this character in the book is felt very acutely, and although Fielding tried to replace him with Scott Wallaker, it was all wrong.
The fate of Mark Darcy, according to the movie Bridget Jones's Baby
Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy were forever separated due to the fact that Helen Fielding "killed" the main character in the last book.
However, the creators of Bridget Jones's Baby decided that the audience is not ready to part with the charming Mark Darcy performed by British Colin Firth.
The action of the picture takes place in 10 years (in the book after 20). Bridget and Mark broke up, and the hero married another. However, this relationship did not bring him happiness, and he is in a state of divorce.
Once, drunk at a celebration, former lovers spend the night together, and laterit turns out that Miss Jones is pregnant. The only problem is that shortly before the night with Mark, she slept with another man, and who the father of her child is unknown. For 9 months, Mark and Bridget have been trying to figure out their feelings and only during childbirth do they realize that they love each other and want to be together. At the end of the picture, they get married.
Mark Darcy - actor Colin Firth
As in the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice in 1995, Colin Firth played the charming Darcy in all 3 films about Fat Jones.
Today he is one of the most sought-after actors in the world, but before his role in Pride and Prejudice, he was practically unknown to anyone, although he acted in films for almost a decade (Lady of the Camellias, Valmont). When he was first offered to play Mr. Darcy, Firth did not agree for a long time, believing that he was not suitable for this role.
After "Pride and Prejudice" the actor became known to the whole world, but his career continued to slip. Having starred in several passing films ("Donovan Quick", "My Jolly Life", "Blue Bloods"), at the beginning of the new millennium, Colin received an invitation to play Mr. Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary.
Oddly enough, after the role of a gentleman lawyer, Firth's film career took off. He began acting not only in British films, but also in Hollywood. And in 2010 he won an Oscar for his role as George VI in The King's Speech.
As sad as it is to admit, it's time for fans of Mark Darcy to say goodbye to this character, because the plot of the last bookFielding put an end to his fate once and for all. The only thing fans are still hoping for is that Helen Fielding will describe the life of the Darcy spouses before Mark's death in a separate book. Whether the writer will live up to the expectations of her fans, only time will tell.
