Going to the theater can be a bright, unforgettable event. It is important to choose the right setting. Before buying tickets, many want to know the reviews, plot and description of the performance. The production of Lady Knight, whose actors have long been known and loved by the audience, will be discussed in the article.
About the play and its authors
Ladies Night was written in 1987 by New Zealanders Stephen Sinclair and Anthony McCarten, co-written by Jacques Collar, a native of Equatorial Africa. Since then, it has been successfully staged in many theaters around the world, and in 2002 it was even awarded France's highest theatrical award, the Molière Prize, in the Best Comedy nomination.
During the time that has passed since it was written, the play has been performed on different stages more than seven hundred times. In Russia, the premiere of Lady Knight, whose actors deserve special attention, took place in October 2002 at the Satyricon Theater.
Backstory
Ladies Night even before the premiere promised to become a sensation. The head of this project, Elshan Mammadov, made a bet on the infamous director Viktor Shamirov - and did notmiscalculated. The plot of the production of "Lady's Knight", the cast, blew up the audience.
Shamirov has just finished work on the play "Innkeeper", which critics unanimously ganged up on. However, it was a box office success. A scandal was also expected from the new production of the director. Moreover, at the end of the performance, a male striptease was announced in advance. The performance was advertised in Moscow brightly and promisingly. Critics were ready to write devastating reviews in advance.
Storyline
So, what is the play about? Six employees of a closed metallurgical enterprise, six unemployed losers, painfully experiencing a midlife crisis, spend their last pennies on drink in a bar. Some wives have already left, others are about to leave.
From the joys of life - disgusting cheap beer and street fights. Behind - the years of hard work at the metallurgical plant, from where they were thrown out as unnecessary. Ahead is a miserable hopeless existence. But everything changes when they see an advertisement in the newspaper for a male strip show. Seeing the price of the entrance ticket, the indignant metallurgists are first shocked, and then light up with the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating their own strip show. From this moment begins their exciting journey into the country of high body technologies.
As six amateurs are trained in the high art of striptease under the guidance of enthusiastic choreographer Glenda, the audience will shudder with laughter. To master this art, you have tosign up for a library, stock up on sportswear and shoes, quit smoking, and cut out carbs. Notorious losers in the course of squabbles and scuffles, either gathering together or running away from each other like the plague, are trying to solve a difficult creative task. And to rally this team, the least suitable for the erotic field, oh how difficult.
What can unite the Turk Wesley and the chauvinist Barry, the exemplary father Greg and the sissy Norman, the red-bearded fat man Kevin and, to top it off, the oppositionist Graham, who resisted the idea of participating in a strip show for the longest time? But they will certainly succeed, and in the end the actors will definitely undress, though not entirely, but only to skin-tight swimming trunks. But this will not stop the women in the hall from squealing with delight and applauding to the point of exhaustion. Perhaps a certain critic was right when he remarked that for a good rest our women need not so much full male nudity as the opportunity to laugh heartily without cares. The play "Lady's Knight", the actors of which give all the best on the stage, cope with this task at 100%.
Actors. First cast
The success of the performance is largely due to the wonderful acting. It was noted by both critics and viewers. The first cast of Lady Knight includes:
- Gosh Kutsenko.
- Vyacheslav Razbegaeva.
- Marat Basharov.
- Dmitry Maryanov.
- Euclid Kurdzidis.
The role of Glenda was brilliantly performed by Lyudmila Artemyeva. At that time, they were all already well-known and popular artists. Criticcalled them "star candidates", but without star stamping.
Director Viktor Shamirov did a great job with the actors - he built the ensemble, thought out the characters' characters and managed to stay within the framework of good taste in the proposed topic. Striptease in the performance is not an end in itself, but just a production detail, personifying the hope for a better future, “the great dream of a little man.”
Modern production
The success of the performance on the Moscow stage ensured it a long life. Today, fifteen years after the premiere, the performance continues to delight the public. Of course, the actors of "Lady's Knight" (photo below) changed over time. Ekaterina Durova, Gosha Kutsenko, Pyotr Krasilov, Vyacheslav Razbegaev, Mikhail Politseymako, Euclid Kurzidis, Pavel Sborshchikov, Valery Yaremenko, Konstantin Yushkevich and Georgy Martirosyan are now in the play.
Over the years of working together, the actors have become a close-knit team of talented like-minded people. Renewed from time to time, this line-up traveled all over the country with tours. Until now, the creative team is convinced that a performance with a purely masculine energy remains in demand and necessary. Staging at the intersection of comedy, drama and shows allows actors to fully reveal their creative potential, and the audience to go beyond the generally accepted theatrical framework.
Style of the play
Since the heroes of the play are hard-working losers, at first they obviously do not shine with sophistication of manners. Performance"Lady's Knight" cast plays in the appropriate style. Rather rude expressions predominate in their vocabulary, denoting the state of mind, parts of the body and mutual “compliments” to each other.
Only after a whole act, the manners of the former steelworkers, and now creative personalities, will become suspiciously pampered, and their speech will be correct, like that of a professor of philology. The actors play all these nuances very clearly, competently and impossibly funny.
Reviews
Theatrical critics greeted the premiere of the performance ambiguously. Given the scandalous fame of Viktor Shamirov's past theatrical productions, some reviewers advised him to "get out of the theater." Profanity, lengthy monologues, too straightforward and ponderous jokes, characters that look not like New Zealand steelworkers, but like Moscow party-goers, well-worn, hackneyed morality…
Among the advantages of the performance, the organic work of the creative team was noted. The actors of "Lady's Knight" are undoubtedly talented. They know how to hold the attention of the audience and, remaining within the framework of good taste, be hilariously funny. The rudeness of the jokes, which some reviewers blamed on the actors, was seen by others as killer humor and the dignity of the play.
All critics unanimously note that in the final scene the audience is clearly not Apollos, but this does not detract from the merits of the performance. "Lady's Knight" will make you laugh, providing the public with positive emotions and a great mood.
Viewer Reviews
The audience also dispersed duringopinions about the performance. Those who came to it, in fact, for the sake of striptease, are outraged that they were deceived and did not show something. Many are dissatisfied with the age of the Lady Knight actors and their physical form and demand either to replace them or to completely remove the play from the repertoire.
Another part of the audience is delighted with the performance, they say that the creative team is doing an excellent job with their roles, and thank the participants of the production for the excellent mood and great time.
In any case, "Lady's Knight" - a male performance for women - is still in demand and is still considered the most original hooliganism of the theater in Moscow.
