Four months later, on the road near Leningrad, a certain Oleg Torchinsky was hit by a car. The young man survived but was badly injured. In his pocket, the investigators find a plan of some residential building. At this time, the Drozdovskys turn to the police, declaring an incomprehensible surveillance of their dacha. From this moment, the pieces of the mosaic begin to take shape, the plot of the painting "The Golden Mine" is rapidly developing. The actors who played the Drozdovsky couple are Lev Lemke, Tatyana Tkach. These characters are not the main ones. However, it is from their appearance that the plot of the film begins to keep the viewer in suspense.

The plan discovered by Torchinsky shows the Drozdovskys' dacha. And his friend tells the investigators about the valuables that, according to their information, should be hidden in the country. And soon this friend also ends up in the hospital with a stab wound. Investigators during the search establish that the former owner of the summer cottage was the father of a recidivist Brunov, who could have hidden what his son abducted there. But the elusive Brunov after the escapeout of the sight of law enforcement. Photographer Kosov is suspected of hitting Torchinsky. The spying on him does nothing. Like Brunov, Kosov simply disappears. The investigation seems to have reached a dead end.

But the experienced Colonel Zarubin, together with the young operative Kroshin, are carefully studying the slightest nuances of the biographies of all the defendants in the case. Having made unexpected conclusions, they develop a new plan, in the center of which is the famous plastic surgeon Jan Karlovich Podniescu. Previously, he was familiar with Brunov and had a certain influence on him. Having forced the surgeon to be frank, the operatives find out that the recidivist has "changed his face" with plastic surgery, produced new documents and lives under a false name, with a different biography. According to the surgeon's description, they recognize Brunov as one of the familiar defendants in the case. Now they know who the criminal is. But this does not help in his capture. The daring Brunov in his new guise again literally slips out of a well-planned ambush at the Drozdovs' dacha. To catch him, the operative flies to Y alta…
