Poster pen designed for calligraphic inscriptions. The tool was in demand for creating inscriptions on old movie posters, was used in drafting, for applying slogans to fabric. If you need to make a budget poster for some event, and ordering a banner is expensive, then a poster pen is your faithful assistant. Where else have such tools been used?

Poster feathers USSR

In Soviet times, poster pens were on sale in small boxes (without holders). The latter were sold separately and were in great short supply. There was a thin tip on the holder, where the pen itself was inserted.

If there was no handle for the tool, it was replaced with improvised items, for example, a tool from the “Cooking” set. Poster pen was also glued to brushes, pencils, pens. Filled them with ink or gouache. Usually black, blue and red. Less commonly, white was used to write slogans on red fabric.

Soviet-made feathers were sold in sets, usually 8 pieces. Widthlines:

  • 2 mm;
  • 4.5mm;
  • 6mm;
  • 8mm;
  • 1cm;
  • 1.5cm;
  • 1.9 cm.

They were given funny names:

  • frog;
  • soldier;
  • ronda;
  • star.

In order to write at least one word beautifully, a lot of work had to be done. Measure the width of the pen, draw the distance between the letters, their height and width. When the ink was dry, the pencil lines needed to be erased.

Now gothic inscriptions or Arabic script are applied with a pen. Ink drawing is also taught in some art schools. For people who consider calligraphy an art, studios are being opened that teach writing and drawing with this tool.

The art of using a poster pen is a thing of the past. Today it is used very rarely, and for people with a subtle sense of style, a fountain pen is suitable for work. It is much more practical than its predecessors. There are models that can refill or change ink cartridges. Pens are often equipped with interchangeable nibs with different line widths.

How to work with a pen

First you need to equip your workplace: there should be a lot of space and you should be comfortable. You need to sit straight, with a straight back. Feet should rest on the floor. If you are right-handed, the emphasis should be on your left hand. All weight should be transferred to this side. Relax your right hand. Take the pen like a pen. The little finger and middle finger need to be bent and placedhand on them. Thus, the emphasis of the right hand will be at two points: on the nails of the little finger and ring finger and in the elbow area.

Let's look at a few exercises to learn how to work with any kind of steel nibs:

  • Move with fingers only. Practice drawing a snake on paper this way.
  • Articulating or sliding movement. The arm from the elbow to the wrist should work as a single mechanism. Draw waves on the sheet.
  • Muscular movement. Draw circles on the sheet in a spiral, moving your arm freely at the elbow.

There are some peculiarities in working with a wide-nosed tool:

  • As the work progresses, the paper must be advanced.
  • The trajectory of the pattern runs from top to bottom and from left to right.
  • You cannot change the angle of the pen.

Calligraphy is an art that develops a sense of beauty, teaches calmness, endurance, enjoying the moment of writing or drawing. Naturally, today there is no need to create posters by hand. Printers are great at this. But writing love letters, signing important documents or creating memoirs is much more pleasant with a fountain pen.
