The history of the English girl group Bananarama began very successfully. The team was created in 1981, and since 1982 a series of singles began, which fell on the first lines of the British charts, and it did not stop for 6 years in a row. The compositions took high places at the same time in the dance charts and pop music charts. Bananarama has entered the Guinness Book of Records as the group with the most hits among girl groups.

Early years

Bananarama was formed in London in September 1981 by friends Sarah Dallin and Karen Woodward, joined by Shivan Fahey. Dallin and Fahey studied journalism at the London College of Fashion. The third member of the group worked for the BBC.

Sarah and Keren were then looking for an inexpensive room to rent. There was no suitable option, and therefore one acquaintance offered them a rehearsal room, which in the past belonged to the Sex Pistols group. It was there that the girls made their first demo.

They decided to send this tape to Demon Records. The producers liked the music, and the company offered the group to sign the first contract in its history. A single of the group was released, which was to the taste of the management of the Decca studio. This started a collaboration that lasted for many years.

Venus

In 1986, the band gave new life to the song Venus, first recorded in 1969 by Shocking Blue.

The popularity of this composition fell on the dawn of the American channel MTV. This and other clips of Bananarama were regularly broadcast on it. Therefore, the music press wrote that the girl team opened a new wave of the so-called "British Invasion".

Sound

If you listen closely to Bananarama's music, you'll notice a distinct influence from the bands that recorded at the Motown studios (particularly bands like The Marvelettes and The Supremes). Can't be denied andthe similarity of their music with the evergreen hits of the 60s.

But at the same time, the work of the Bananarama group absorbed the musical achievements of subsequent decades, for example, the abundance of synthesizers and electronic drums, characteristic of the new wave and late disco style. This explosive mixture led the audience into indescribable delight. As a result, Bananarama's songs spent a total of 164 weeks on the UK charts.

From trio to duo

At the height of their popularity, the girl trio suffered an unexpected line-up reduction. Vocalist Shivan Fahey is married to British guitarist Dave Stewart of the Juritmix band. According to some reports, it was he who advised his wife to leave the group that performed pop music and do something more serious. After leaving the band, Fahey became a member of the duo Shakespears Sister. Bananarama's latest album with her is called Wow!. It became the band's most successful record.

Bananarama has decided to continue its activities no matter what. The remaining members began to sing together.

In this composition, 6 more albums were recorded. But only one of them reached the top ten in the UK.

Reunion

In 2017, it became known about the reunion of the classic composition of the Bananarama group. Fans of the team have been waiting for this event for about three decades.

The members gathered for a concert tour of 22 cities in the UK and four performances in North America. Since Bananarama didn't undertake such long trips in their early, most successful period, it can be said that this is the first such event for the original line-up. Demand for tickets in the UK was so strong that additional concert dates were announced.

Success in the US

Sarah Dallin admitted to one of the American music publications: "The reaction of the audience to our concerts was phenomenal. I did not expect such a success. We have so many fans in the States, and they all want us to sing for them!".
