Historical series and movies are another window into the past. Thanks to them, we can easily go on an exciting journey back in time, without having any prior knowledge about a particular era. Of course, series and movies are primarily a form of entertainment, but this does not mean at all that entertainment cannot go hand in hand with learning.

Today we decided to take a closer look at TV shows about the 19th century. What can they talk about? Actually, a lot. For example, about various interesting historical figures who lived in those years; about high-profile events that shook the whole world; about other important stories that, for one reason or another, faded into the background; about the features of life and society.

North & South (2004)

Let's start ourtoday's list of the best historical series from a mini-series about 19th century England. "North and South" is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell, which touched on the events of the Industrial Revolution.

A young girl Margaret, who grew up in comfort and prosperity all her life, is forced to move with her family to the north of the country. Milton, which is just experiencing the industrial revolution, becomes her new home. Margaret makes new friends and meets a cotton mill owner named John. The characters are faced with a conflict of views and interests, but despite this, they begin to have feelings for each other.

Lark Rise to Candleford (2008)

Another English series about the 19th century, which tells about the everyday life of the inhabitants of the small village of Lark Rise and the inhabitants of the we althy town of Candleford, located next door. The main character of the story, a young girl named Laura, finds a job at the city post office and moves from her native village. Her life in a new place is immediately filled with various events and acquaintances with interesting people. Poor and rich, love and betrayal, honor and cowardice, weakness and nobility are all part of the stories that Laura tells.

Ordinary farmers, soldiers, nobles, craftsmen and other inhabitants of the English province become heroes.

"Dostoevsky" (2010)

They filmed this series about the 19th century in Russia. The story tells about the events thatfell on a rather long period of Dostoevsky's life - from the moment the circle of Petrashevists was crushed and up to the creation of the novel "The Brothers Karamazov" by the writer. During this time, many interesting and sad events happened to Dostoevsky - this is an exile, and the beginning of an affair with A. Suslova, and the death of the first wife M. Isaeva, and joint work with a number of soil journals, and acquaintance with A. Snitkina, and, of course same, the loss of a son.

"Ladies' Happiness" (The Paradise, 2012)

The series is an adaptation of the famous novel by French writer Emile Zola. The main difference from the original source is that the creators decided to move the scene of the events taking place on the screen from Paris to England.

At the center of the plot is a young girl named Denise. Finding herself in a big city and having neither money nor a house with her, she miraculously finds a job in a special shop for ladies. In the new place, Denise realizes that the delightful showcase of the expensive boutique is just a facade, and behind it lies a completely different world, full of intrigue, love and power ambitions.

"Taboo" (Taboo, 2017)

A British-produced drama television series based on a story written by actor Tom Hardy (he also played the title role).

The main character of the story is a seekeradventure named James Kezaia Delaney. He spent about 10 years in Africa, after which he returned to England, taking with him fourteen stolen diamonds. Having inherited land, he begins to make plans to create his own ship empire and establish trade with China. However, in order to realize his plans, James has to become a member of a dangerous game. Intrigues and intricacies, blackmail and conspiracies, the clash of interests between the government of England and the East India Company - for the sake of his goal, Delaney is ready to do anything and even more.

The Alienist (2018)

One of the newest series about the 19th century, which takes place in New York. Residents of the city are shocked by a series of brutal murders.

The victims are children, and with each new corpse found, it becomes clear that they are being killed in more and more sophisticated ways. It seems as if someone is pursuing the goal of performing an eerie blood ritual.

A flamboyant trinity is taken to investigate the murders, consisting of future President Theodore Roosevelt (and currently serving as police commissioner), talented alienist psychologist Laszlo Kreizler (who studies mental pathologies) and crime reporter John Moore.
