In April 2009, Kelly McGillis revealed in an interview that she is a lesbian. She also said that she always felt this in herself, but the pressure of society forbade her to express herself. Now that the kids are grown and she doesn't have to worry about the future, she can admit it.

After that she lived together with her close friend Melanie Leys. They met when she worked as a bartender at Kelly and her second husband's restaurant. In 2010, they got married, but broke upalready in 2011.
