Artist Bouguereau. Pictures and destiny

Adolf-William Bouguereau is one of the most recognizable masters of late academicism. The master of the brush was born in 1825. The artist lived a long and eventful life. Contemporaries considered him one of the outstanding painters, the Impressionists predicted the recognition of posterity and the glory of the greatest French artist of the 19th century.

An outstanding representative of the French school took early as an artist. Bouguereau painted pictures in accordance with the traditions of the academic school. However, in his interpretation of classical plots and frozen classicist forms, they received a different sound. In his paintings, fleeting gestures are masterfully conveyed: a tilt of the head, a slight nod, a lowered look. The bodies are filled with movement, grace. They surprisingly combine academic sculptural forms and lightness.

The great painter died in 1905. After the death of the artist, interest in his work quickly declined. He never accepted innovative ideasimpressionism, while remaining true to the academic tradition.

Two Venuses

The painting "The Birth of Venus" by Bouguereau is not new in terms of plot. The appearance of a beautiful goddess on a shell surrounded by cupids and sea nymphs goes back to the traditions of the early Renaissance. As a representative of the academic school, Bouguereau in his artistic searches relied on the experience of the masters of the Early and especially the High Renaissance. Compositionally, his work goes back to the famous "Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli. There are also references to Raphael's Triumph of Galatea.

Just like in the work of Botticelli, Venus Bouguereau appears naked on the shell. This is a classic attribute that accompanies the image of the goddess, as a symbol of sensuality, sexuality and fertility. The master refers to the canonical image, his Venus is a golden-haired white-skinned beauty, throwing heavy long curls back like a veil.

Celebration of beauty

However, Bouguereau's painting "The Birth of Venus" differs significantly from previous samples. If Botticelli depicted the moment of the appearance of the goddess from the sea foam, then Bouguereau depicted her ascent from the sea to the city of Paphos on the island of Crete. Unlike the modest and shy Venus Botticelli, the image created by the master of the 19th century is filled with sensuality, overt sexuality. His Venus does not hide behind bashfulness, she reveals herself, demonstrating her beauty and femininity to the world.

A large-scale painting about three meters high is stored in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting "The Birth of Venus" by Bouguereau is rightfully considered one ofgems of this collection and the best work of the author.
