In the winter of 1974, thousands of London rock fans gathered at the Albert Hall to watch Bryan Ferry's first solo concert. Some were dressed like their idol's stage attire - a white tuxedo, a stud in the buttonhole, and pants with a red belt.
Most of the people in this audience were teenagers - Roxy Music fans. This group, performing Glam Rock, appeared 3 years before the event described. Each album of the group has consistently received the Golden Disc award.
David Bowie once said in one of the programs on American television: "Roxy Music is the only British band worth visiting".
Solo career
Bryan Ferry has greatly expanded his audience with his solo albums. The first two discs - These foolish things and Another time, another place - fell in love with the audience thanks to the brilliant reworkings of compositions that had become classics by that time, and the novelties of pop music.
Most of them the singer choseindependently, based on personal musical preferences.
These two albums can be called an anthology of English and American variety art from 1930-1960. The discs include cover versions of songs from stars such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.
Bryan Ferry on first album
When the subject of this article was once asked on what basis he chose the songs for his first disc, he replied: "I wanted to make a highly Catholic, spiritual selection of songs and put aside the desire to please people of all ages. Some this record will appeal for one reason, some for another. Some may not appreciate it. But the main idea will be clear to everyone."
Musician Style
Albums of Bryan Ferry, like the discs of Roxy Music, have never been focused only on the youth audience. The intellectuality of these pieces of music was clearly visible through the outward rebellion.
Brian Ferry's concerts have always been full of numerous surprises for the public. For example, the shows of the 70s were often decorated in the style of Salvador Dali.
As for the music, the live arrangements of the songs were striking in their elegance. For his performances, Bryan Ferry often invites an orchestra consisting of more than 30 musicians. In the 1970s Martin Ford was the arranger and conductor of this group. Then the group of Bryan Ferry included several members of Roxy Music, a bassist from the King Crimson group and other musicians. The composition of thisteam says a lot. Almost all of its members had previously played in art rock bands, which means they were brought up on complex and sophisticated music.
Stage look
Like David Bowie, who has repeatedly expressed his sympathy for the work of the Roxy Music group and Bryan Ferry, the heroes of this article have always loved to amaze the public with a variety of images. Many call him a theater actor in the music scene. During the first concert tour of the Roxy Music group, he went on stage in a tuxedo, playing the role of a secular lion, irresistible macho. Then followed the image of a military man: in uniform and with a monocle in his eye. Bryan Ferry appeared in front of the audience and attired, characteristic of American motorcycle policemen.
The brightest role
Viewers of the concerts also remember Bryan Ferry as Woland.
As you know, the song Sympathy for the devil by the Rolling Stones, which he covered, was written based on Bulgakov's work. During her performance, Bryan Ferry took the stage in a blue mohair suit. A large bouffant of frizzled hair gleamed in the spotlights. The opening words of the song complemented the first impression: "Let me introduce myself, I am a man of great we alth and great taste."
Best Songs
Many critics have noted that Bryan Ferry's best songs are those that talk about loneliness, pain and similar states of the human soul. He is an excellent psychologist and portrays a person well in the most dramatic moments of his life.
Beatles and Bob Dylan compositions familiar to many music lovers sound completely new in his performance. A beautiful, strongly vibrating and deceptively soft voice, making accents in unusual places, fascinates the listener. He seems to say, "It's great that you've come to hear me" and begins to sing a long "funeral" version of Bob Dylan's "Sunshine". This is the darkest performance of this piece.
Brian Ferry's music makes the listener look at familiar things in a new way, gives them a new sound.
The singer seems to take old pieces into a new dimension.
Disks
Bryan Ferry has recorded 15 solo studio albums.
His discography is striking in its variety of styles. In the 70s and 80s, he was one of the founders of a new direction of rock music, called "new wave".
In 2012 he recorded the album The Jazz Age with his own orchestra. The disc includes cover versions of jazz compositions from the 20s and retro-styled reworkings of Bryan Ferry's hits. In 2014, the artist recorded the vocal part for a new version of the composition "Johnny and Mary", the first performer of which was Robert Palmer. Bryan Ferry recorded this single with Norwegian DJ and producer Todd Terje.
It is noteworthy that the artist dedicated one of his albums to Bob Dylan, including compositions only by this author.
Brian Ferry's most recent CD to date is Avonmore which was released in 2014year.
Almost all the songs for it were written by Bryan Ferry himself, with the exception of two cover versions. One of them is the already mentioned composition Johnny and Mary. Clips of Bryan Ferry are also popular among his fans. His most famous video is Don`t stop the dance.
