This technique has been famous since the time of William Shakespeare, but writers and directors rarely used it. However, Michael Frain, an English playwright and novelist, took this step. He wrote the script for the play. And so, in the early 80s of the last century, the long-awaited premiere of his play took place on the stage of the capital of Great Britain. The next viewers are guests of Broadway spoiled by masterpieces, and then the play began to confidently walk around the world. It was called Backstage Noise.

Biography of Michael Frain

Even before worldwide fame fell upon him, the writer worked as a correspondent for the London publishing house and composed dramas.

Being fluent in Russian, Frain presented the meaning of Anton Chekhov's works to the English-speaking public in a new way, translated the plays of the brilliant writer in more detail and carefully, namely: "Three Sisters", "Uncle Vanya" and "The Cherry Orchard".

The playwright and novelist's first one-act play was not a success, but despite the failure, Michael Frain continued to work, and diligence bore the first fruits. The next work of the writer -"Alphabetical Order" - won the Evening Standard award as the best comedy of the year. Michael Frain's plays Copenhagen, The Duck Years, Pause, and Offstage Noise were then acclaimed by theater critics.

The latter is a brilliant comedy that introduces the viewer into the backstage life of the theatre. First, the audience watches the rehearsal of the actors in a regular theater, then in parallel the action is transferred to the backstage of the theater, and in the third act the audience follows the ups and downs of the actors playing this play already eight months after the premiere.

Position Comedy

"Noise behind the scenes" - a performance by the Moscow City Council, which premiered in 1987. At first glance, it may seem that it is easy for actors to play, because who, if not them, knows the behind-the-scenes side of the profession. But perhaps this is the main difficulty. Playing a parody of a parody is not easy. To do this, directors and actors need to have enough strength in reserve and self-confidence.

The plot of the comedy "Backstage Noise"

The short plot of the production is as follows: the provincial theater invites the director to put on the play "Love and Sardines". From the name it is already clear what level this theater and all its “creative”Group. On the part of director Lloyd Dallas, every effort is made to bring the troupe to life, but the actors are constantly sorting things out, amusingly bickering, and so on. All this under the laughter of the audience.

The second act is no less curious. The director announces the premiere of the performance, but his wards are busy with themselves: they are jealous of each other, hide, lose, find and hide the props again. And at this time, a performance is being played on the stage. Finally, the third act - here everything is mixed into one heap. The director himself, who in the first act tried to work fruitfully with the actors, and in the second act to save the troupe from failure, in the third act himself is drawn into their life. And it is not clear to the viewer where is the truth and where is fiction. Everything is so mixed up and turned upside down.

If in the first act the audience who came to the performance "Noise behind the scenes" laughed with restraint, in the second and third acts they did not hold back their emotions, they applauded heartily. The actors have outdone themselves. There was no end to the applause. The audience gave the actors a standing ovation.

Warm responsesthe performance received from the audience who visited the theater three or four years ago, when for the first time the actor Alexander Linkov tried his creative powers as a director. Unfortunately, the artist passed away in 2014 at the age of seventy. His film roles were remembered by the Soviet audience for a long time. Especially films about the adventures of Deniska, where Alexander Lenkov charmingly played the father of the protagonist.

Reviews

What do the audience and critics say about the play "Noise behind the scenes"? Reviews about him are mixed. According to the creator himself, this is a farce that should be played accordingly. If the viewer does not understand this, then the production may seem vulgar to him. Of course, the quality of the performance depends on the performance of the actors and the director's work, but we must not forget that the grotesque exaggerates, deliberately disfigures the style of narration. And having come to the temple of Melpomene, inveterate theater-goers should prepare to watch a curious performance that exaggerates reality. And it will be better if the theater guests prepare in advance to see the masterpiece.
