This technique has been famous since the time of William Shakespeare, but writers and directors rarely used it. However, Michael Frain, an English playwright and novelist, took this step. He wrote the script for the play. And so, in the early 80s of the last century, the long-awaited premiere of his play took place on the stage of the capital of Great Britain. Even before worldwide fame fell upon him, the writer worked as a correspondent for the London publishing house and composed dramas.

Being fluent in Russian, Frain presented the meaning of Anton Chekhov's works to the English-speaking public in a new way, translated the plays of the brilliant writer in more detail and carefully, namely: "Three Sisters", "Uncle Vanya" and "The Cherry Orchard".

The playwright and novelist's first one-act play was not a success, but despite the failure, Michael Frain continued to work, and diligence bore the first fruits. The next work of the writer -"Alphabetical Order" - won the Evening Standard award as the best comedy of the year. Michael Frain's plays Copenhagen, The Duck Years, Pause, and Offstage Noise were then acclaimed by theater critics.

The latter is a brilliant comedy that introduces the viewer into the backstage life of the theatre. First, the audience watches the rehearsal of the actors in a regular theater, then in parallel the action is transferred to the backstage of the theater, and in the third act the audience follows the ups and downs of the actors playing this play already eight months after the premiere.

History of the play
