The new film of the world-famous saga about robots from the future and Doomsday, called "Genesis (Terminator)", received not the most favorable reviews, but this does not detract from some of its merits. Undoubtedly, it deserves attention, especially in comparison with the 3rd and 4th parts of the media franchise, which crashed.

Pre-shooting and filming process

The picture has several executive producers, including Megan Ellison, who is also the head of Annapurna Pictures, which refused to finance the new trilogy. Financial obligations fell on the shoulders of Paramount Pictures and Skydance Production, which announced the reboot. The fantastic action movie "Terminator: Genesis" until the last moment was shrouded in a veil of secrets that confuse the audience. All information about the details of the plot was kept in the strictest confidence, so it was not clear whether it would be a reboot, or a full-fledged sequel. Preparations for filming began on December 1, 2013, and they themselvesthey took place in San Francisco and New Orleans for 106 days. The company ILM joined the cooperation, working on computer graphics, starting from the second part. Terminator Genisys was completed on May 22, 2015, and was released worldwide a month later.

Storyline

The events of the film take viewers to several timelines at once. The starting point of the story is the prologue from the perspective of Kyle Reese, who tells the story of how in 1997 the Skynet computer network led the world to a nuclear apocalypse. Several years have passed since Doomsday, and one day little Reese almost died at the hands of terminator robots, but was saved in time by John Connor. As before, the latter is the leader of the resistance due to his extensive knowledge of the structure of machines. Further, the plot unfolds in 2029, when the war for peace is almost won, but the enemy manages to send the T-800 terminator into the past to kill the mother of the future leader, Sarah Connor. In parallel with him, Reese moves in order to interfere with the insidious plans of the villains. In the first half hour of the film "Terminator: Genisys" almost does not run counter to the original script. Arriving in 1984, Kyle encounters another T-1000 model terminator, from whom Sarah Connor saves him. But in this universe, she was originally at one with the hero of Arnold Schwarzenegger and explained to the sergeant that there was a time shift and the past has changed, so the heroes will have to face completely new situations and enemies.

Creators

Lead the resurrection of the "Terminator" was offered to Ang Lee, Denis Villeneuve and Rian Johnson, but all three refused. As a result, director Alan Taylor was put in charge of the project. Prior to that, he was mainly seen as a director of serials. Among his most famous works are such popular shows as "Game of Thrones", "Boardwalk Empire" and "Mad Men". Perhaps this was reflected in the picture, in which the narrative turned out to be very twisted, and many storylines and timelines were involved, passing through the entire film. Also in his filmography is Marvel's Thor 2, which launched him onto the big screen road as a great experience. The script was written by Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis, with James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd as consultants and original character designers. Lussier had directed several Dracula films and Ride Crazy before, but mostly worked as an editor. And Kalogridis wrote scripts for films like Alexander and Shutter Island.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Next, the producers faced the question of the leading actors. One thing was clear - for the project to become successful, the actors and roles of the film "Terminator: Genisys" must be perfectly matched. That is, in no way can we do without Arnold Schwarzenegger and his T-800. However, it is no secret that the legend of cinema has aged quite a bit, so his character has undergone a makeover. Nevertheless, in one of the scenes, the same young terminator appears, recreated withusing computer technology. This time he bears the name Paps, which Sarah Connor awarded him as a child. Almost all the humor of the picture is concentrated in the mouth of the character Arnie. And in general, the film turned out to be much less serious than in 1984 and 1991. The hero of Schwratzenegger served as a kind of link between the old and the new, thanks to which it becomes clear that the tape is a full-fledged continuation, despite the performance of the main roles by new actors.

Emilia Clarke

Global fame and success immediately surrounded Emilia after the HBO TV series "Game of Thrones" was released, based on a cycle of books by the famous writer George Martin. She managed to cope with stiff competition and was approved for the role of Daenerys Targaryen. Filming for the television series began in 2010 and continues to this day, with Emilia Clarke continuing to play one of the main characters in the story. In between seasons, she also managed to star in several films, including Spike Island, Dom Hemingway and the short film Chained. And in 2016, it is planned to release two full-length works with her participation at once. After being approved for the role of Sarah Connor in the film "Genesis (Terminator)", the responses of Internet users about this decision were very controversial, because the audience was used to the role of the "mother of dragons", and Linda Hamilton is still not forgotten. However, the actress did an excellent job with the role and added to the treasury of her professional experience, going beyond the television series.

Jason Clarke

In the film "Terminator: Genesis" the actors were selected with great care, and the producers decided to take on the main roles of such performers, whose faces will be familiar to the audience. Emilia's namesake, Jason Clarke, was cast for the role of John Connor. Before reaching the big screen, he took part in numerous projects, often in the background. The actor began to be recognized after such films as Johnny D., Deviation and The Drunkest District in the World. And his roles in sensational films, including "Goal Number One" and "Planet of the Apes: Revolution", can be considered a real success. In 2015, he played a major role not only in the new "Terminator", but also in the action-packed film "Everest".

Jai Courtney

Jaya Courtney is one of the most promising and rising actors. He started with participation in TV series and also played in the background in Jack Reacher. And as the leading actor on the big screen, he came in the form of the son of the hero Bruce Willis in the new "Die Hard" in 2013, which is a kind of attempt to breathe new life into the cult saga of the last century, like "Genesis (Terminator)". Reviews of the film as a whole were very unflattering, but the aspiring actor was noticed, thanks to which he took part in such projects as "I, Frankenstein", "Divergent" and "Water Seeker". On this path, he came to play one of the most important roles in the rebirth of the Terminator, namely Kyle Reese, who will become the father of the future leader John Connor. Many considered himtoo big compared to Michael Biehn, but according to others, he was quite convincing. In 2016, he will be back on the big screen in the long-awaited Suicide Squad, where he plays Captain Boomerang.

Sub-characters

In the film "Terminator: Genisys" supporting actors also contributed. The brilliant J. K. Simmons, who won an Oscar in 2015, embodied on the screen the image of Detective O'Brien, who fought on the side of good. It is thanks to his character that the heroes successfully escape from a predicament. But the role of the British actor and former football player Matt Smith has not been made public for a long time, as it has a decisive role for the plot. All the sites listed him as Alex, but this turned out to be a standard ploy to hide script details, so he is already listed under a different name in the end credits. Smith became widely known for his participation in the popular TV series Doctor Who, where he played the main role for three seasons. And the son of Miles Dyson named Danny, who actually breathed life into the Skynet network, was played by aspiring actor Dayo Okeniyi.

Reviews and the future of the project

Unfortunately, the new film of the famous saga called "Genesis (Terminator)" received not the most positive reviews from critics, but rather extremely negative ones. Many of them refer to the lack of uniqueness, seriousness andsincerity, which resulted in an unsuccessful attempt to remake the classics in a new way. In Russia, the comments of users and the opinions of reviewers were equally divided: praising the picture of Alan Taylor and sharply critical. As for the main network resources, on Rotten Tomatoes only ¼ of users rated the film positively, on iMDb its rating is 6.6, and domestic users of the popular Kinopoisk website awarded it the same rating. As you know, it was planned that the fantastic action movie would receive 2 more sequels and become a trilogy. However, it is no secret that it is the box office, ratings and reviews that affect the possibility of continuing. In this case, they, unfortunately, turned out to be far from expectations, which put future filming in question. Therefore, those who liked the picture, for now, can only wait for comments from the creators.
