The concept of the future film changed several times until Kripke settled on the idea that two brothers would travel around the country and fight evil spirits. The youngest of the Winchesters had several serious relationships. In college, he met Jessica, with whom he hoped to start a family. But then Dean burst into Sam's life with the news of the disappearance of his father and a request to help find him. Unable to refuse his brother, he goes with him in search. Arriving home, Sam finds Jessica murdered in exactly the same way as his mother.

After what happened, he could not recover for a long time. Sam was constantly tormented by dreams in which he saw the dying Jessica again and again.

In the third season, he meets the demon Ruby, whom he first uses to save Dean. Gradually, she comes to trust Sam and a romantic relationship begins between them.
