Storyline

The case takes place in the Statistical Department, where the head is a woman - Lyudmila Prokofievna. She is only 36 years old, but she has already earned the nickname "mymra" because she has no other interests besides work. She is so accustomed to giving orders that when she hears that an employee of the statistical department, Bublikov, has died, she exclaims: "How did he die? I did not give such an order!" A shy employee named Novoseltsev has no career prospects, but at the same time he is raising two children by himself, living from paycheck to paycheck. His friend and colleague named Olga Ryzhova, who is in love with Yury Samokhvalov, appointed as Kalugina's deputy, advises him to apply to his boss for a promotion. No one could have imagined that as a result of closer communication between an inconspicuous employee and a leader who suppressed the feminine in herself, an office romance could arise.

Meet Novoseltsev

Ryazanov did not conduct any castings, the actors for the main roles were determined immediately. So, for the 40-year-old Novoseltsev, A. Myagkov was invited, who successfully starred in the director's previous comedy - The Irony of Fate. This is one of the most successful works of Leah Akhedzhakova. The actress absolutely did not fit the type of the heroine, who was supposed to look like a tall, charming girl. Shooting Akhedzhakova in The Irony of Fate, Ryazanov decided to turn a small actress with a specific appearance into the woman who would give advice to Kalugina on the way to her transformation. And this distinguished the feature film from theatrical productions, becoming its hallmark.

A married lady who meets her former classmate falls in love with him. And he writes letters, although he has long been married. This lady "in terrible roses" is piercingly played by Svetlana Nemolyaeva. The hero of her novel is Kalugina's deputy named Yuri Samokhvalov, whose role is played by Oleg Basilashvili. Once Ryazanov wanted to see him in the image of Ippolit, so in his new film he seemed to return the debt to the brilliant actor.

Her heroine has developed such a vigorous social activity that she has long forgotten in which department she is listed. This is told by phrases from "Office Romance":

The heroine of Ivanova constantly collects money for a funeral, then for an anniversary, acquires unthinkable gifts, getting into comical situations. On this occasion, in response to the remark to hand over another 50 kopecks, Novoseltsev remarkably said: if someone else is born or dies on that day, he will simply be left without lunch.

The saddest development for Shurochka is the fact that she was "exiled" to the accounting department.

"Office Romance" has become a film where the dialogues are written so masterfully, noticing various aspects of Soviet life, that you want to return to them again and again. As well as a wonderful song, the words to which were written by Eldar Alexandrovich, passing off as the creation of William Blake. It was under this authorship that he brought poetry to Andrei Petrov, the composer who created the leitmotif of the entire film.
