Show business is a commercial activity in the entertainment field. This is what they call the holding of events, the performance of numbers aimed at entertaining a mass audience. Show business is the film industry, television, beauty contests, radio. In the broadest sense, these are advertising of information programs, performances by actors, shooting clips, creating posters.
History
For the first time such events began to be held in ancient times. In ancient Greece, there were theaters, large-scale sports competitions were held. In Rome, the peculiar celebrities of show business were gladiators. And if the theater was understood by people with a developed aesthetic perception, then the fights were watched by any, even the most unpretentious audience.
Due to the increased demand for such events, professional organizers and participants in the battles appeared. They went on tour. As this area developed, bookmakers appeared that took bets on the victory of various show business stars of antiquity.
Due to the riskiness of such activities, a high probability of death was engaged inthese are for the most part slaves. But there were also those who came here voluntarily. There are cases when gladiators remained in battles even after gaining freedom. The most successful fighters received expensive gifts, interest from bets.
When the ancient civilization died, spectacular events sunk into oblivion. But in people the need for "bread and circuses" flourished. In Europe during the heyday of Christianity, gladiator fights were condemned, but they were replaced by new amusements of a slightly different kind. Knightly tournaments were held, and cruelty in society only increased - and the fun was in the spirit of those times.
Spectacle events have returned in full in the New Age, when the service sector has developed.
In Russia
The first Russian show business actually appeared in 1854. At that time, state theaters had a monopoly on holding variety shows. And in 1882, the monopoly was abolished, and private entrepreneurs appeared who made money on entertainment.
Until the 20th century, the main problem in this area was brewing - it was difficult to gather a lot of spectators for one event. And when radio, sound recording, and after - cinema appeared, it gave a new life to show business. He began to present spectacles for all the people.
Once, until the 1960s, the main audience in the country was an adult audience, but then the industry began to focus on youth.
Worldwide
The entertainment industry developed most rapidly in Western European countries and in the USA. The need for leisure became more and more acute, the demand for products grew. The first scandalsshow business that people followed with pleasure.
To meet the needs of society, entrepreneurs invented ever more sophisticated ways to spend their leisure time - they found new talents, produced shocking spectacles, in which huge amounts of money were invested. Outside of Europe and the United States in show business, this manifested itself less clearly. There is a trend towards Americanization in society.
Development of mass culture
The development and implementation of creativity in this area were driven by the market. Objects of art are a commodity in these respects, and subjects are consumers. Perception is due to commodity-money exchange. Stimulates his marketing.
Show business involves exploiting the popularity of artists. Show business gossip is widely discussed in society due to the fact that most are afraid of living a flamboyant life and prefer to follow the lives of other people. The main persons in the industry are not the artists themselves, but the producers who sell projects, create an image, select repertoire, negotiate with the media. The success of the project depends on getting into the tastes of consumers. There are a lot of tools here: timely rumors of show business, the personal charm of the artists and the correct presentation of their images contribute to the increase in the popularity of the project.
"Stars" are created in several ways. Sometimes talented people develop their skills on their own, earning money on performances. After they write down successful works, findthe firm with which the contract is concluded.
Second way - the producer is looking for a suitable performer, looking at many candidates. As a rule, a competition is held for participation in a specific project. Whoever gets the role becomes the new star.
Income
The most successful stars expect the highest incomes. For example, the net income of musician Paul McCartney in 2002 was $72,000,000. The income of stars is a kind of rent, it is entirely due to the presence of demand for them. But not all stars receive lifetime provision.
Reverse side
Often, receiving the first money, a person begins to “litter” with it, and by the end of a career, many live the same life out of habit, eventually coming to ruin. Most often in show business do not linger for several decades. There are far more career-destroyed stars in the world who have failed on their way to fame than have come to success.
Features of the sphere
This industry has extremely high marketing costs. At the same time, the sphere is actually controlled by the five largest producers of phonograms - they own more than 70% of the world market.
From the very heyday of the region, there has been a confrontation between commercial spectacles and "high" art, in which talented people are involved. A product designed for a mass audience often has a lower quality, does not contribute to personal development, the development of art, but brings more money.
With the growing popularity of show business pressedturned out to be elite art forms. And at the moment, virtually no cultural phenomenon is able to gain recognition until it acquires the format of a show. Market relations have become the only way to save art.
Russian realities
The most popular today are not the true masters of their craft, who sincerely indulge in their work, but those who have received approval in the collective consciousness, created the brand. It is not talented actors who become successful, but corresponding virtual values.
On Russian territory during the Soviet era there was strict state censorship. The list of requirements for each artist was long. Their pay was determined by their popularity. In 1992 the situation changed.
The 1990s saw the heyday of production projects. As a rule, an attractive girl was taken as an artist, and then an intensive "promotion" began. Soon the whole country knew her, and the tour began, on which the producer, together with a hired artist, earned their money. The role of the media in show business in Russia turned out to be decisive.
Until now, many talented projects are known, films that have remained in the shadows, their creators did not have a budget. While on television channels, on the radio, low-quality works were played and became popular, the recording of which was carried out solely for the purpose of making money. This trend does not go unnoticed.
Russian show business lags behind the Western one by many steps. For western sharks, this area of ourcountry is only interesting as an importer of American and European products.
Attempts to interest Western consumers in Russian products have failed. The only high-profile breakthrough in this field in recent decades was the Tatu group, whose compositions were distributed in ordinary US shopping centers along with foreign tracks in the 2000s.
Differences
Specialists of the region note the fact that Russian realities and Western show business are very different. So, European and American producers do not take on projects in which there is no creative potential, because of the great competition in this field. But in Russia this happens everywhere. This is clearly seen in the example of our cinema, which cannot be compared with Western cinema. At the moment, financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation provides 50% of the total budget of Russian films per year.
Sponsored by a certain circle of directors who make films with a clearly traceable propaganda thought. The infamous "Cinema Fund" has created a situation in which it is virtually impossible to stay afloat without state support in this area. There is a reduction in the number of Hollywood productions in the Russian box office. There is virtually no competition. While in the West the highest quality projects are sponsored. And in a competitive environment, filmmakers strive to win the audience with their talent.
