Makovetsky was born in Kyiv in 1958. He was raised by a single mother. Since childhood, Sergei Vasilyevich has been accustomed to speaking Ukrainian, and he speaks it well to this day.

Sergei Makovetsky in his youth did not dream of an acting career. By chance, one day he was invited to play the role of Schastlivtsev in a school production of Ostrovsky's play "The Forest". Sergei did not agree, so the director of the performance had to almost force the boy to take part in the performance.
