In 1939, Agatha Christie published a novel that she later called her best work. Many readers agree with her. Proof of this is the total circulation of the book. About one hundred million copies sold worldwide.
Stanislav Govorukhin has never been a fan of the detective queen. This novel was an exception, and therefore the Soviet director filmed it in 1987. We are talking about the book and film "10 Little Indians". Where was this movie filmed? How did the filmmakers manage to recreate on the screen the mysterious atmosphere inherent in the books of the English writer?
Negro Island
The plot of Christie's work is terrifying and keeps you in suspense. The writer thought for a long time, and in the end she liked what happened. However, later she had to make significant adjustments. As a result of improvements, the ending became less tragic, and the title more politically correct. "And There Were None" is the title of the edited version of the novel.
Govorukhin used the original version of Christie's composition. Perhaps that is why his film is one of the best adaptations of the writer.
Remember the plot. Ten people who have nothing in common with each other arrive on Negro Island. They are housed in a mansion. In the room of each of their guests, a sign with a funny counting rhyme hangs on the wall, the content of which subsequently terrifies the inhabitants of the castle. Each of them dies strictly according to the script of a seemingly harmless poem.
The Negro Island is a figment of Agatha Christie's fantasy. Her novel has been filmed several times. The British directors had no major problem as to where to film 10 Little Indians. England is rich in medieval castles, which can serve as a wonderful backdrop to the dark story invented by Agatha Christie. It was not so easy to decide where to shoot "10 Little Indians" for domestic filmmakers.
It was not difficult for Govorukhin to choose the actors. When writing the script, he tried to deviate as little as possible from the original. The director created two films based on the works of the classics of world literature, not counting "10 Little Indians". "Where to shoot an adventure movie?" - a question that could hardly confuse this director. Filming of "Robinson Crusoe" was carried out on the island of Shikotan. Paintings "In Search of Captain Grant" - in Bulgaria and the Crimea. But where was the film "10 Little Indians" filmed? In Crimea? In Bulgaria? Or, perhaps, in the Mosfilm pavilions?
Landscape
Spectatoris in constant tension when watching a film by Stanislav Govorukhin. The noise of the waves, the cloudy sky, the rocky landscape of the island - all this adds to the already gloomy plot of mystery. At the same time, there is no props, artificiality. Where did Govorukhin shoot "10 Little Indians"? What kind of rocky landscape can be seen in one of the most terrible films of Soviet cinema? An attentive viewer who has visited Crimea at least once will easily answer the question of where the film "10 Little Indians" was filmed. The film adaptation of the famous novel by Agatha Christie was created in "The Swallow's Nest".
Mr. Owen's mansion has served as an architectural and historical monument, which is located on a forty-meter cliff of Aurora Rock. It is worth devoting a few words to the history of this attraction, which attracts many tourists every year.
Swallow's Nest
After the Russian-Turkish war, a wooden structure was erected on the site of this historical monument. You can learn about how it looked thanks to the canvases of such painters as Aivazovsky, Bogolyubov, Lagorio. The building was erected for a Russian general. His second owner was a doctor, about whom little information has been preserved.
The Swallow's Nest acquired its present form thanks to Steingel, a Russian oilman who fell in love with the romantic Crimean landscapes. On Aurora Rock, he bought a summer cottage, and then built a castle in the spirit of the Middle Ages. The old building was demolished in 1912.
Not only a filmGovorukhin was created in these picturesque places. The filming of the films "Mio, my Mio", "Hamlet. XXI century", "The Blue Bird", "The Journey of Pan Klyaksa", "First Strike" took place here. But back to Govorukhin's painting.
Shooting
The work process was not easy. For filming, part of the building was covered with scenery. But the plywood shields were constantly torn off by gusts of wind. As a result, they had to be reinforced several times.
Shooting of many episodes took place in the Vorontsov Palace. Some in Y alta. The director and performer of the role of Vera Claythorne managed to combine this work with filming in the film "Assa". This film was released in the same 1987.
Some episodes of "10 Little Indians" were filmed against the backdrop of a masterfully crafted mock-up of Negro Island.
Actors
Alexander Kaidanovsky, who played Lombard, initially did not want to act in this film. But he agreed solely because of the money. It is noteworthy that his hero in one of the scenes admits that he came to the island for the sake of profit. Outstanding Soviet actors played in the film: T. Drubich, A. Abdulov, A. Zharkov, L. Maksakova and others. The role of the judge who restored justice with such cruel methods, as you know, was played by Vladimir Zeldin.
