At first there were just talented young artists who were truly in love with the fun genre of operetta. They united in the Altai Territory Operetta Ensemble and performed before the public not only with skits from various productions, but also with full-fledged performances.
It was a small group led by conductor John Amiragov. For two years, the troupe toured the cities and villages with such great success that in 1958 they were invited to join the Biysk Drama Theater.
The 1958-1959 season was such a success that the theater began to be called a musical drama theater, and operettas by Soviet authors and classics in this genre were chosen as the main direction of the repertoire. Among them is "Wedding in Malinovka" by B. Alexandrov, which opened the 1959 season.
The popularity of the genre among the public was so high that in 1960 the institution was awarded the title of Regional Musical Comedy Theater by the decision of the Altai Regional Executive Committee, and in 1964 the entire troupe moved to work in Barnaul.
