Description

In the repertoire of MalyDrama Theater of Europe (St. Petersburg) a diverse number of productions. These are the works of Russian playwrights (Chekhov, Dostoevsky and others), and foreign (Shakespeare, Schiller, O'Casey, Yukio Mishima).
The theater has two stages:
- Large (in the repertoire of which productions of famous classics).
- Malaya, or Chamber (where performances by lesser-known playwrights are staged, but also very deep and powerful in nature).

History of the theater
The theater was founded in the forties of the last century in Leningrad.
Without a permanent program, its building for rehearsals and performances, the small theater troupe of the Drama Theater put on brilliant performances in small towns and villages of the Leningrad Region, as well as on the front stage.
In the early 50s, the theater was finally given permanent premises - a house on Rubinshteina Street, 18.
The real heyday of the Maly Drama Theater of Europe (St. Petersburg) occurred in 1973, when Yefim Padve became the main director.
At this time were delivered:
- "Incident".
- "Fiesta".
- "Twenty minutes with an angel" and others.
Efim Padve reflected depth and serious dramaturgy in his performances, and thiswas noticeable in every of his work.
He also attracted young directors to the theater. So, once the future chief director and artistic director, Lev Dodin, appeared here.
In the early 70s, Lev Dodin staged the play "Robbers" (K. Chapek) in the theater, which brought him the first success and attention from theater critics.

Dodin attracts attention in his stage work with the individuality of the productions and the novelty of the language.
In the late 80s, the Theater of Europe (St. Petersburg) carried out its first grandiose international tour (performing on the stages of theaters in Great Britain, France and other countries of the world).
And thanks to the active participation in the theatrical life of the world, excellent productions in 1998, the theater was awarded the status of European, which only three theaters in the world have (Odeon in France and Piccolo in Italy).
By the way, in addition to creative plans for 2018, the theater team has a goal to play on stage in a new room, which was specially built for the Maly Theater of Europe - on Zvenigorodskaya Street, 7, in St. Petersburg.
A few words about the artistic director
Lev Dodin began his theatrical career at the age of 13. And in 1966 he graduated from the Theater Institute in Leningrad and made his debut as a director of the television play "First Love".
Then followed: work in the Youth Theatre, staging author's performances, "free swimming" with staging performances in manytheaters.
And in 1974, Lev Dodin began fruitful cooperation with the Maly Theater of Europe in St. Petersburg (it was thanks to him that the title "Theatre of Europe" was awarded already in 1998).
After the productions of "Razboniki" and "Home", they begin to talk about him in theater circles as a brilliantly talented director.
Currently heads the theater and is its chief artistic director, as well as an honorary member of the General Assembly of the Union of Theaters of Europe.
The creative work of Lev Dodin in the theatrical field throughout the country and the world is marked by a huge number of awards and prizes. Including the highest European theater award.
In addition, he is an honorary doctor of the Humanitarian University (St. Petersburg), professor and head of the department of directing at the Academy of Theater Arts (St. Petersburg).
