The Benefit Theater in Moscow appeared at the end of the 20th century. Initially, it was an experimental studio. The repertoire of the theater is small, but it includes performances designed for different age categories, classical and modern plays.

The Benefit Theater opened its doors in 1986. It was organized by Anna Nerovnaya. She is still the artistic director of Benefis today. Initially, it was an experimental theatre-studio. There were a lot of those back then. The initiative for such experiments came from the Moscow government. In 1991, the studio received the status of a state drama theater. The troupe was given a room next to the Novye Cheryomushki metro station. The building is a classic building from the time of Khrushchev. The troupe occupies this building to this day.

The "Benefit" theater on Cheryomushki from the very beginning of its career has started a tradition of inviting famous artists from other troupes to participate in its productions. At various times in performancesparticipated: Anna Kamenkova, Evgeny Knyazev, Elena Ivochkina, Alexander Simonets, Sergey Kolesnikov, etc.

The stage in the theater is small, the hall is small, which contributes to the greater involvement of the viewer in the action.

The Moscow theater "Benefis" has a namesake in the city of Yelets, Lipetsk region. It was founded by Vladimir Nikolaevich Nazarov. Yelets is the birthplace of Mikhail Prishvin, Ivan Bunin and Tikhon Khrennikov.

The theatrical traditions of the city have their roots in the first half of the 19th century. Already then there was a professional troupe. In total, there were four theaters in Yelets. They all closed at different times. The last one was in 1948.

The Benefit Theater was opened in 1993. It is located in a building that was built back in 1911. Previously, it housed the city theater, which closed in 1948

The troupe takes an active part in various festivals for small towns in Russia. Often, artists and directors received diplomas and awards for their performances.

The Benefis Theater (Yelets) is also the organizer of the festival. It was held in 2010 under the name "The smallest and unknown festival". Yuri Alshits supervised its implementation. The festival was dedicated150th anniversary of the birth of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. It was attended by directors and artists from around the world: Russia, Greece, Italy, Poland, France, Norway, Argentina, England, Sweden, Cyprus, Switzerland, etc.
