No one is immune from tragedy, even the idols of millions, actors and fashion models, frivolously smiling from the pages of Playboy magazine. A violent death ended Dorothy Stratten's life when she was only twenty years old, and her film career was just beginning to take off.
Short early biography
Dorothy Ruth Hoogstratten is known to the general public as Dorothy Stratten. The biography of the future fashion model and actress begins from the moment of birth. The girl was born in a poor area of Vancouver (Canada) at the end of February 1960. In addition to her, the family brought up two more children. She graduated from Centennial High School with excellent marks. It is not known how her future fate could have developed if there had not been a fatal meeting with photographer and promoter Paul Snyder. In an effort to change the situation, driven by a thirst for enrichment, seventeen-year-old Dorothy agrees to pose naked for a photographer. Assessing the potential of the provincial, Snyder forges the signature of Stratten's mother on the agreement and sends photographs to Playboy magazine. The photos are a resounding success, the couple goes to Los Angeles together. In 1979 DorothyStratten becomes a centerfold girl of the most famous candid magazine, a year later - "Miss Playmate". Not wanting to lose a source of steady income, Paul leads her down the aisle.
To the movies
Dorothy Stratten was noticed by Hollywood filmmakers. She made her film debut in Birth of Autumn (1979). In the same year, she managed to take part in the production of the film "Skatetown, USA" directed by William A. Leavey. In the project, in addition to Dorothy, many TV stars of the 1970s played, including Scott Baio, Ruf Bazzi, Flip Wilson and many others. The next picture that replenished the filmography of the actress was the parody fantastic comedy "Galaxina" directed by William Sachs. Stratten played the key character robot girl Galaxina. At first, her heroine cannot speak, the temperature of the robot's skin is close to zero, and when you try to touch it, an electric shock follows. However, in the process of plot development, she reprograms herself, and in the future, the romantic line develops according to all the laws of the genre.
True love
But all Dorothy Stratten's previous achievements and films became insignificant after she joined the cast of the comedy film They All Laughed (1981). Young director Peter Bogdanovich worked on the project. A stormy romance began between the young people, Bogdanovich promised to make a new Marilyn Monroe out of Dorothy. Unable to restrain her feelings, the actress decides to leave her husband. Already during the filming process, she lives in the director's room. Paul Snyder hires a private detective to incriminate his windy wife. He did not want to lose his "ticket to high society", as he lived solely at the expense of his wife.
Celebrities cry too
Meanwhile, Stratten begins divorce proceedings. Dorothy decided to meet with Snyder to discuss the details. On August 14, 1980, a month after filming of They All Laughed ended, Paul Snyder ends Dorothy's life with a pistol shot, then commits suicide.
Bogdanovich is having a hard time with the death of his beloved. The tragedy was so resonant that no company took on the distribution of the film because of the extremely negative press coverage associated with the murder. He spent about $5 million from his own savings distributing the painting. Then he went on sabbatical. His seclusion lasted four years and was interrupted only after the publication of the book "The Killing of the Unicorn", dedicated to Dorothy Stratten.
The biography of the actress is reflected in the work of director Bob Fossey "Playboy Star". The role of Dorothy was played by the granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway - Mariel. Director Gabrielle Beaumont also offered his author's vision of events to the public in the TV movie The Dorothy Stratten Story.
