Youth

Mikhail Evgrafovich S altykov is a Russian writer, a nobleman who was born in 1826 in the small village of Spas-Ugol (Tver province). His first teacher was a simple serf Pavel, and then he was taught by a priest and a student of the theological academy. At the age of ten, the boy was sent to Moscow, to a noble institute, and two years later, to the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. This is where his creative biography begins.

Here under the influence of young poetsMikhail Evgrafovich begins to write poetry. At the end of the lyceum, his certificate will include, along with such school misconduct as smoking and rudeness, writing works of disapproving content. Popularity

At the end of the lyceum, the future writer is enlisted in the military office. He is fond of French literature and begins to write bibliographic notes himself, which are published in Notes of the Fatherland. 4 years after graduating from the Lyceum, in 1848, he wrote the story "A Tangled Case". In this work, the author's attitude to serfdom and aversion to routine are clearly visible. These speculations about the fate of Russia might have gone unnoticed had they not coincided with the French Revolution. In the same year, the writer was exiled to Vyatka, where his provincial biography would last for 7 long years.

Not much is known for certain about the writer's service in Vyatka. He served as a clerk in various state institutions. Meanwhile, provincial life during this period opened up for S altykov the opportunity to better know all the dark sides of the existence of ordinary people. During his stay in Vyatka, Mikhail Evgrafovich wrote "Provincial essays", and also compiled a "Brief HistoryRussia". Here he finds a wife for himself, and in 1855 he is allowed to leave Vyatka.

Literary activity in the last years of life

In 1856, S altykov was sent to the Tver province, and in 1860 he was appointed to the post of vice-governor of Tver. His literary biography also continues. S altykov-Shchedrin wrote a lot at this time, published in well-known magazines. And in 1863, after his resignation, he moved to St. Petersburg and became one of the editors of Sovremennik. In the last years of his life, he writes stories and fairy tales, trying through humor and satire to convey to his reader the spirit of freedom and independence.
