While spaceships roam the galaxy, anime is slowly taking over the world. There is no such country where there would not be a couple of dozen fans of Japanese animation. Experienced otaku know that it comes not only in different genres, but also types. But novice anime fans are increasingly wondering what OVA is in anime. How does it differ from a series or a feature film, what happens, and why is it created? Let's find out.

What is an anime OVA?

OVA or, as they say in the Land of the Rising Sun, the original anime video is a series specific format that is exclusively for DVD or the web. "Ovashka" will never be shown in cinemas or on TV screens, as they do with full-fledged anime series or films in Japan.

The first OVA was released in 1983 for a sci-fi drama. After her debut, this genre was actively used to create videos in the 18+ category, in 1983 alone 14 OVAs were released, 11 of which were intended for an age-limited audience.

Storyline

To date, "sheep" come out almost after every season of the series. There are never more than six of them, on average 2 or3. The storylines of the works are not a continuation of the anime. Usually this is either an adaptation of manga chapters that were not included in the series, or a separate story with the main characters. Like, for example, the anime Fairy Tail (OVA 2nd). In it, the characters appear to the audience as residents of the ordinary world, and not members of the wizards guild.

But in the anime "Very Nice, God" OVA tells about the daily life of Nanami and Tomoe. "Ovashka" is not a continuation of the storyline of the season, it is a small whole story that consists of a plot, plot development and denouement. And all this fits into the standard 24 minutes.

OVA and filler

When otaku beginners don't know what anime OVAs are, they often confuse OVAs with fillers. In television, fillers are additional episodes that have nothing to do with the main plot, but are added solely to increase the duration of the series. If you watch the series and skip a couple of fillers, then this will in no way affect the perception of the plot. A great example of a series with fillers would be Naruto: Shippuuden. One of the dubbers even called this work "Naruto: Hurricane fillers." Of the 487 episodes that have aired so far, about 200 are fillers. The reason for the release of fillers is often the rapid release of anime series. And the manga, on which the series is based, does not keep up with this pace. Therefore, the animators are forced to slow down the release of the series, and at the same time not leave the audience without another series with their favorite characters.

Quality assurance

OVA and filler are similar in only one way - they do not affect the storyline that develops in the series. The filler is much weaker than the original series, both in terms of stories and in terms of art, but sometimes fillers can come out for months, making up full-fledged arcs (an arc is a series with a well-defined sequence that is connected by one plot). In this regard, "ovashki" are not inferior in quality to the original anime. This can be seen both in the drawing and in the plot. OVA never interrupts the broadcast of the series, but airs after the end of the season.

With "sheep" life is brighter

"Homeless God", "The Tale of Fairy Tail", "Volleyball", "Student Council President, Maid" - there are hundreds, if not thousands, of series that have "oats". What is an OVA in anime? For ordinary people, a common term that means a series that does not affect the storyline. And only otaku knows that the OVA is another meeting with your favorite characters, who can be seen in different genres and roles, and enjoy their company for the last time at the end of the season.
