The architecture of Yekaterinburg is a rather entertaining sight. Before the revolution, the city was built up mainly with buildings in the style of Russian classicism. True, since the second half of the nineteenth century, the architectural appearance of the city has changed somewhat: Russia has become a capitalist country, and Yekaterinburg, as an industrial center, has become an object of chaotic development, containing completely different styles. Everything changed significantly with the coming to power of the Bolsheviks. From that moment on, buildings in the city began to be built in the avant-garde and constructivist style, and, starting from the thirties of the twentieth century, the architecture of Yekaterinburg was replenished with majestic buildings in the style of monumentalism. So what sights can most clearly show the architectural appearance of Yekaterinburg?
Sevastyanov's House
This palace was built in 1863-1866 according to the design of the architect A. I. Paduchev. It got its name due to the fact that the building belonged to the collegiate assessor N. I. Sevastyanov, who, however, subsequently soldhim to the treasury. Therefore, since 1874, the District Court began to be located in the house of Sevastyanov in Yekaterinburg. After the revolution, in 1918, the first labor commissariat in Russia appeared here.
Sevastyanov's house in Yekaterinburg was built in the neo-Gothic style, but the coloring and some elements of decor resemble baroque. Such bizarre eclecticism makes this building a truly wonderful architectural example, and it is not for nothing that it received the status of a federal cultural heritage site.
Vysotsky Skyscraper
The Vysotsky business center in Yekaterinburg has long been considered the northernmost skyscraper. Indeed, the height of the building is 188 meters, and the number of floors in the building reaches 54. From the observation deck, which is located at a height of 166 meters, a wonderful panoramic view of the entire city opens up. On the second floor of the business center is the Museum of V. Vysotsky. The basis of the museum's exposition is his personal belongings, here you can even see the hotel room in which the famous musician lived during the tour. So fans of the music of this outstanding artist should definitely visit the skyscraper.
Old Station
Once there was a railway station here, however, now this building, somewhat reminiscent of a gingerbread house, houses a museum of the history of the Sverdlovsk Railway. Directly in front of the building is an open area where various thematic sculptures are located, one way or anotherassociated with the railroad. Because of this building, the architecture of Yekaterinburg takes on a somewhat fabulous look.
Museum of the History of Yekaterinburg
Where can you learn more about a city than in a history museum? This exposition is located in an old building of the nineteenth century and contains many interesting exhibits. Here you can hear a lecture about the Peasant War of 1773-1775, learn more about the founding fathers of Yekaterinburg and even hear local urban legends. In addition, in the museum you can look at the wax figures of the rulers of the Russian Empire and the most famous figures of Yekaterinburg.
Building of the Sverdlovsk City Council
Before acquiring the final, majestic and monumental appearance characteristic of "Stalin's skyscrapers", this architectural monument was rebuilt many times. So, the most striking tower with a spire was built on only in 1954, after which the style of the building did not change. Nevertheless, it stands out significantly from other Yekaterinburg buildings, as a result of which it was decided to make it a monument of regional significance.
Church on Blood
The history of this church is very gloomy, but almost all the inhabitants of Russia have heard it. This temple was built on the site of the Ipatiev house, which served as the place of execution of the royal family and its servants. This temple, of course, is new, erected in 2003, but it is made in the Byzantine-Russian style. The building is two-level, and if the upper temple is light, with many windows it producesthe impression of elevation and even some kind of festivity, then the lower one - gloomy, with low vaults - recalls the terrible event that took place at this place. Actually, this is why the church attracts thousands of pilgrims every year and is, in fact, the main attraction of Yekaterinburg.
Keyboard Monument
Yes, you heard right, there really is such an art object in Yekaterinburg. And although it is not officially recognized as an attraction, it is nevertheless included in many city guides and shown on excursions. The monument is incredibly popular among locals and tourists, because it stands out sharply against the background of other attractions with its originality and modernity. The "keys" of the monument are made of concrete and symbolize the computer era that humanity entered quite recently.
The architecture of Yekaterinburg is very rich, there are many more monuments in the city worthy of your attention. Visiting such cultural sites is very important, because it makes us more educated and allows us to learn more about the history of the country, and sometimes even leads to serious reflections.
