The sci-fi writer, who has published numerous novels, works with Games Workshop, which has been selling board games since 1987 and then began publishing books and CDs about the Warhammer gaming universe.
The style of his works is close to gothic fantasy with action movie elements. The author's books and stories use a linear plot, or linear-parallel. Therefore, novels are read easily and quickly.
Graham McNeill. Fantasy Writer
G. McNeill, a well-known fantasy writer, was born in Glasgow. Until 1999 he worked as an architect. But since 2000, he decided to change his life and began to write novels about the Warhammer universe, the famous fantasy series of books based on the game. At the moment, more than 100 books related to the Warhammer 40,000 universe have been released, 53 books written by different authors in the Horus Heresy cycle and 11 books from the Primarchs cycle. And also released many additions, small stories, audiobooks and laws, i.e. codes for living beings from other planets.
For the famous Warhammer universe, Graham McNeill wrote the "Legend of Sigmar" trilogy, the "Ambassador of the Empire" cycle, and also, in collaboration with the "pen brothers", wrote codes for the fantasy world. There is also a series of "Order of the Ultramarines", "Iron Warriors" and other books.
In addition to the main Warhammer novels, he has written many short stories: "Eye of Vengeance", "Code", "Monsters of K alth", "Sacrifice of Skulls" and others.
The Legend of Sigmar cycle
A separate exciting story written by the author about the great hero Sigmar, who freed people from the orcs. The Legend of Sigmar cycle consists of 3 novels.
- "Hammer Holder" - 2008
- Empire - 2009
- God King - 2011
The first part of the trilogy tells the story of how Sigmar freed people from the evil orc raids and united humanity into one empire.
The second part is devoted to the description of how the great conqueror and first emperor Sigmar fights with wild tribes on the borders of the empire and at the same time solves issues of internal politics.
The third book "God King" is the most exciting. There is a strong (but not fully disclosed) hero antagonist here, with the appearance of which the plot becomes more complicated. Against the Emperor of people - Sigmar, rises strong andcruel necromancer - king of the dead. And only the emperor can protect the human race from the rampant forces of evil and thereby perpetuate his name, receiving the title of God of people.
Book "Empire". Reviews
The second part received a lot of good reviews and is the best "creation" of Graham McNeill. The Empire: The Legend of Sigmar is written as a classic combat fantasy with many main and secondary characters. The storyline is not overly intricate. Some readers like it, others find it weak.
The main character - Sigmar - is described one-sidedly. It does not have internal contradictions, which is characteristic of people. Fight only in the outside world - showdowns with the provinces of the empire that do not want to obey, and wars with external opponents.
However, in the fantasy genre, revealing the inner world of the protagonist is not as important as in dramaturgy. In general, the novel is very popular among fans of the Warhammer universe, and professional critics speak quite well of it.
The Horus Heresy Cycle
Gramm McNeill also participated in the cycle describing the events preceding the epoch 40,000 and wrote several novels.
He wrote the following books in this series:
- "False Gods" - 2007
- Mechanicum 2011
- "1000 Sons" - 2012
- "The Outcast Dead" - 2012
- "Angel Exterminatus" - 2015
- "Spirit of Vengeance" - December 2016
Another novel "The Scarlet King" by Graham McNeill was written in 2017, but there is no Russian translation of the book yet. And when the novel will appear on store shelves is unknown.
All books in the Horus Heresy series describe events 10,000 years before the Warhammer 40,000 era. At this time, an intergalactic civil war is taking place in the fantasy world. Leading campaigns to other worlds are the great Primarchs - warlords.
Primarch Horus is the commander-in-chief of all mighty armies and fleets. It is designed to return to the Empire of the autocrat those planets that flatly refused to obey the almighty ruler of Terra.
The novel "Fulgrim". Reviews
Another great novel by the writer is the story of the primarch Fulgrim, who betrayed the Empire and its values. Fulgrim's duty is to lead a legion of "emperor's children", but he is too consumed by the desire to achieve unprecedented perfection, to know all the secrets of the world and master all available knowledge.
Primarch Fulgrim went against the orders of his father-creator, and after the split of the empire gave independence to those who did not want, like him, to submit to authoritarianism. In essence, these are stories about Fulgrim's pride, which led to a new war and the split of the Empire.
There are also many battle scenes in the novel. But at the same time, the book is serious. Answers many questions from readers on the ideology of the Empire and reveals the identity of the Emperor himself throughconfrontation with Fulgrim - his son.
Cycle "Ambassador of the Empire"
Two more novels from the Warhammer universe written by Graham McNeill - the book "Ambassador of the Empire" and "Teeth of Ursun" - published in Russian in 2007. But written a little earlier - in 2003 and 2004.
They are about a dedicated hero - Kaspar von Velten. He, young and brave, came at the direction of the Emperor to restore order in the conquered lands. But faced with the forces of Chaos, penetrating from the underworld.
The ambassador's fight against the demons of the dark world is the main storyline of this series by Graham McNeill. Kaspar defeats the dark forces, despite deceptions and fears. But didn't he pay a high price for his loy alty?
Writer's Awards
In 2010, Graham McNeill received a special award, valuable to science fiction writers - the David Gemmel Award for his novel "Empire". Gramm McNeill continues to work with Warhammer publishers and may receive more awards in the future.
