The legendary band from Newcastle formed in the late 70s. Musicians from completely different bands came together to create a fundamentally new group, which was called Venom. The group consisted of 5 people: Dave Rutherford and Geoffrey Dunn played guitars, Dean Hewitt became the bassist, Chris Mercaters took the drums position, and Dave Blackman became the vocalist.
Formation of Venom
Unfortunately, in the early stages of the band's existence, there were constant line-up changes. So, some time after the founding of the Venom band, drummer Chris and vocalist Dave left, who were replaced by Clive Archer on bass and Tony Bray on vocals. However, the reshuffling of the Venom line-up did not end there. The band also parted ways with bassist Hewitt, replacing him with Alan Winston, and also abandoned guitarist Rutterford, taking Conrede Lant in his place. Winston did not stay in the band for long, and after his departure, Lant began to play bass guitar. Thus Venom became a quartet.
First of all, the musicians decided to take stage names for themselves, and the more infernal, the better. Thus bassist Archer becameJesus, guitarist Lant became Kronos, vocalist and frontman Bray took the name Abbadon, and second guitarist Dunn took the name Mantas. The year 1980 was marked by the recording of the band's first demo, and one of the songs was performed by Lant. Soon after, the band said goodbye to Archer and Venom became the trio we all know.
Early Venom
A year after the release of the demo, the band signed a contract with Neat Records and released their first single called In Leage with Satan. This was followed by the first full-length record of the group Venom. The album was called Welcome to Hell and was inspired by the giants of the metal scene, Motorhead. The album is full of diabolical, dark and satanic imagery, and this idea became fateful for the band. The second and, perhaps, the most significant album of the group was called Black Metal, and on the cover of it there was a goat face and a pentagram.
The record turned out to be the first step towards Venom's glory. The band played outright thrash, but the satanic lyrics served as an inspiration for thousands of fans of a new genre - black metal. The group's third album was called At War with Satan, and it was he who brought Venom worldwide fame and the opportunity to perform at the largest and most prestigious venues in the world.
Crisis in Venom
The first problems in the team began after the release of the fourth album Possessed. Mainly, the trouble was the departure of Mantas for he alth reasons. The loss had to be made up for by two musicians at once: Jimmy Clare and Mike Hickey. However, here too there is no problemare over. In 1987, Kronos decided to leave the band for his own solo project, which he named after himself. Kronos took two new members of the band with him.
It would seem that now can interfere with the creativity of Venom? The songs of the group are still loved and appreciated by the whole world of metal, for example, Black Metal, on which many bands recorded cover versions, including the famous Dimmu Borgir, Calm Before the Storm and others. In addition, Mantos soon recovered and returned to the team.
Mature work of Venom
So, after the return of Mantos, things in the group went smoothly. The new musicians, taken in place of Kronos and two guitarists, fit in well with the band: Ton Dolan became the bassist and vocalist, and Al Barnes took over the guitar. It was this line-up that recorded the new Venom album. The group seemed to have become stable, and nothing foreshadowed changes. The album was called Prime Evil and was produced by Nick Tauber and Kevin Ridley. They also worked on the famous Calm Before the Storm.
Without any line-up changes, the band recorded several more albums, but Barnes left the band in 1991. At this stage, the gradual extinction of the group can be noted. To record the next record, Venom brought in session musicians and brought in keyboards. However, after recording the record, the team again became a trio. For a long time, Venom left the studio and was engaged exclusively in touring. Since 2004, the group began to show signs of life again and exists to this day.
During their career, the group released 14studio records, most recently titled From the Very Depths, released in 2015.
