This excerpt from Victor Hugo's Les Misérables is seen by many as a standalone book. And in fact, the story of a small man inside a vast plot has a plot, a climax and a denouement - everything that is necessary for an independent story. The writer had a special fondness for disadvantaged people, especially children, and therefore in his novels children's images are written out especially vividly. This is another hero of the novel - Gavroche, who died on the Parisian barricades, and a whole gang of homeless children, and, of course, Cosette.

Summary

The girl's story begins with a description of the ill-fated fate of her mother, who became a victim of deception. She was seduced and abandoned by her beloved man, she had a girl, and now Fantine wanders around the world with a child in her arms in search of food and work. But who would hire a woman with such a burden? She accidentally finds herself near the tavern of the Thenardiers, who have three small children - twogirls and baby boy. During a conversation with the innkeeper, Fantine manages to persuade her to keep the girl with the condition that she send money every month for her maintenance. The greedy Thénardiers were glad of this opportunity to earn extra money. And little Cosette stayed with them.

Summary of the life story of the baby in the house that sheltered her has no light. The evil Thenardiers hated the child and believed that she was eating their children. Although the poor girl ate garbage, she ate under the table along with dogs and cats. The mother carefully sent the promised money, but the greedy owners were not enough, and they raised the payment several times. Poor Fantine meekly complied with all their demands, although she had to sell her luxurious hair, and then her teeth.

From the age of five, Cosette was actually a servant in a tavern. The master's daughters no longer let her into their games and also treated her like a servant. The mother no longer sent money - she died of consumption and longing for her daughter. A hopeless orphan life - that's what Cosette was doomed to. A summary of her misadventures is unlikely to fit in one description. The reader has two feelings mixed in his soul - pity for the child and indignation at human greed and malice. An unexpected turn in the fate of this Cinderella was predetermined by the very development of the plot by Victor Hugo.

Cosette: Salvation Story Summary

In one of the cold late evenings, the hostess sent the girl for water to the stream. The poor thing was terribly afraid of the dark, but stillshe was more afraid of Madame Thenardier's wrath. On the way, she stopped near the illuminated shop window and stared at her dream - a big beautiful doll. Then she ran to the stream and, trembling with fear, scooped up a bucket of water. She was dragging it, bending over from the weight, and suddenly someone's strong hand picked up the bucket.

- This is too heavy a burden for you, child, said the stranger, - who sent you on such a night?

- Madame Thenardier, mistress of the inn, - answered Cosette.

He helped carry the bucket and went into the tavern. The hostess looked at the poorly dressed old man with contempt, but invited him to sit down at the table. After talking with her, the guest learned how Cosette got to them, a summary of their misfortunes and impoverishment through the fault of this voracious hanger-on. Cosette was sitting under the table, and at the moment when the master's daughters were distracted from their rag doll, she got out and grabbed it. The woman's anger surged through her head. She was saved by a stranger who asked permission to take the orphan with him. The innkeeper was glad, but Mr. Thenardier intervened, who began to bargain: after all, he raised this girl and is attached to her as to his own daughter, so he does not agree to give her away just like that. Except for money. Finally came to an agreement. The stranger left the tavern and soon returned with a doll, the same one that Cosette admired in the window. The innkeeper and her daughters almost burst with anger.

She was leaving this evil house, her hand was tightly held by an unfamiliar old man in tatters. This is the summary.

"Cosette". Victor Hugo and his heroes

The reader in this part of the novel can only guess that the poor girl's life has taken a turn for the better. Only later does he learn that this poorly dressed stranger is none other than the former mayor, rebel and runaway convict, benefactor of the outcasts, Jean Valjean. The fate of the girl, thanks to him, is now changing dramatically. He takes care of her like a daughter, gives her an education, sacrifices his freedom in difficult times in order to save her beloved. The story of the girl Cosette is yet to come.
