The greedy Thénardiers were glad of this opportunity to earn extra money. And little Cosette stayed with them.

In one of the cold late evenings, the hostess sent the girl for water to the stream. The poor thing was terribly afraid of the dark, but stillshe was more afraid of Madame Thenardier's wrath. On the way, she stopped near the illuminated shop window and stared at her dream - a big beautiful doll. Then she ran to the stream and, trembling with fear, scooped up a bucket of water. After talking with her, the guest learned how Cosette got to them, a summary of their misfortunes and impoverishment through the fault of this voracious hanger-on. Cosette was sitting under the table, and at the moment when the master's daughters were distracted from their rag doll, she got out and grabbed it. The woman's anger surged through her head. She was saved by a stranger who asked permission to take the orphan with him.
