Victor Hugo's "Notre Dame Cathedral" (read the summary below) is one of the most beloved among lovers of classical literature. Based on his motives, films are made and performances are staged, and the rock opera of the same name was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful in 1998-99. And who will not be affected by this tragic story?
If you have not yet read the French writer's novel Notre Dame Cathedral, the summary, we hope, will encourage you to do so, because in a short article it is impossible to convey the drama that this sad story is saturated with. The action takes place in 1482. It all starts with the fact that a huge crowd has gathered in the Palace of Justice, waiting for a festive mystery, the author of which was the poet Pierre Gringoire. However, everything did not go according to plan, and the mystery, not having time to begin, smoothly turns into an outright farce, calling for the election of a king of jesters.(or buffoon's dad). Everyone who wants to get this "position" must make the most terrible grimace. The people rage and fool around, but the main prize - the jester's tiara - goes to the local hunchbacked ringer Quasimodo, who accidentally got to this "holiday of life" and did not make a grimace, because he was already ugly. Victor Hugo ("Notre Dame Cathedral" is considered one of his best creations) very colorfully described these events.
Suddenly, a cry is heard in the crowd that Esmeralda, a beautiful gypsy, is dancing in the square. Everyone ran to look at this wondrous spectacle. Saddened, Gringoire also went to look at her. But he was not the only one who was captivated by the beauty of the young girl: the priest Claude Frollo literally inflamed with passion for her and, by all means, decided to woo her. When the girl was walking home, he, along with Quasimodo, tried to kidnap her, but Gringoire, who was following her, saw this and called for help. She is rescued by the dazzling soldier Phoebe de Chateaupier. Gypsy Esmeralda genuinely falls in love with him, but he has a bride, the blond Fleur-de-Lys. The literary masterpiece "Notre Dame Cathedral", the summary of which is unable to retell all the details, truly touches the soul.
Further the plot develops as follows: Esmeralda saves Gringoire from hanging by agreeing to become his wife. But she loves Phoebus, who once appoints her a date, as he is subdued by the beauty of the girl. But Frollo found out about this, and at the moment when Phoebus tried to kissgypsy, plunged a dagger into his back. Esmeralda is in a swoon. Waking up, she hears accusations of killing Phoebus. She faces the gallows. Frollo invites her to run away, but on the condition that she will be his. The girl refuses. He tortures her with a "Spanish boot", and Esmeralda can't stand it: she confesses to everything she didn't do. She does not know that he is alive. On the day of his execution, she sees him and faints. Quasimodo, who also turned out to be a victim of a conspiracy, picks her up and runs away with her to Notre Dame Cathedral (the summary hides a lot of interesting details). For some time the gypsy lives there, but her brothers - thieves and beggars - storm the temple to rescue the girl. Quasimodo protects her, he fell in love with Esmeralda when she gave him a drink on the day of his "coronation".
Gringoire, knowing that Frollo wants to kill her, takes the girl out of the cathedral and hands her over to the priest. He again arranges the execution and watches its implementation, standing on top of the tower of the cathedral and grinning angrily. Quasimodo understands that it is the priest who is to blame for the brutal execution of an innocent girl. He throws him off the tower, and takes the lifeless body of Esmeralda and takes it to Notre Dame Cathedral (a summary will never convey all the drama of the situation and the desperation of the main characters). There he lays the dead girl on the floor, hugs her and dies.
