For his own reassurance, Famusov is compiling a calendar. Marks are made there when there will be christenings, funerals or a dinner party for trout, where Famusov will certainly arrive. The attitude towards the service of Chatsky is completely different. He became the personification of the emergence of a new, modern, educated and progressive person who opposes the old foundations, the worship of ranks, serfdom and autocracy.
However, Famusov is not as limited as his entourage like Colonel Skalozub or the many-faced secretary Molchalin, as well as all the other guests invited to the evening. He has his own point of view on the ongoing processes in society, and he tries to defend it consistently. He is a staunch feudal lord, and is always ready to send a violator of order to hard labor in Siberia for any sins.
That's what Famusov is all about. Chatsky’s attitude to the service is completely different, he left the public service and declares that he would be glad to serve, but it’s sickening to serve. Famusov replied: "… You are all proud! Would you ask how your fathers did? Would you study by looking at the elders …".
