Recently, when films are released that are difficult to classify as real art, many of us want to watch a truly intellectual movie. What is included in this concept? Speaking in general, these are pictures, the content and meaning of which you need to think on your own. You will probably understand the director's idea, or maybe you will find something of your own.

Most often so-called art-house films fall into this category. These works are known to a narrow circle of viewers, and only professional critics can understand the hidden meanings. Not every art house, however, can be called intellectual. For example, "Green Elephant", as well as "Salo, or 120 days of sodom" would be more reasonable to call "thrash" - a word meaning "garbage" in youth slang. It is unlikely that any deep meaning can be found in human genitals, excrement and entrails.

This kind of films have been made for a long time. A classic of the genre, of course, can be called, for example, Alfred Hitchcock. Psycho, filmed in 1960, is one of the director's most famous films. This is a story about a young girlwho is tired of hiding the relationship with her married lover. Full of desperation, she

steals a large amount of money and leaves the city. But even in the roadside motel where she stayed, not everything is calm: the owner suffers from a split personality. It is considered by many to be the best intellectual film ever, and also one of the origins of the thriller genre.

Other great Hitchcock films are The Birds, Rear Window, Rebecca.

The famous Italian director Federico Fellini also made intellectual films. Perhaps his most famous painting is "8 and a half", in which Mastroianni played the main role. This stream-of-consciousness film tells the story of a filmmaker going through a complex creative and spiritual crisis.

The Road, La Dolce Vita, Cabiria Nights are also interesting films that will make the viewer think carefully about the meaning.

In Russian cinema there are also quite a few films that can be confidently defined as “intellectual cinema”. Tarkovsky's works have become a real classic. His most famous film is "Stalker" - a free interpretation of the Strugatsky's book "Roadside Picnic". This is a story about how several people were looking for some kind of wish-fulfilling room located in a special place - the Zone. Other works by this director, such as "Mirror", "Nostalgia", "Andrei Rublev" are also able to turn the mind.

Another domesticSokurov is the director of intellectual cinema. His most famous works are "Moloch", "Alexandra", "The Sun", "Russian Ark". The last picture is about our contemporary, who, once in the Hermitage, finds himself in the past and travels through the epochs together with another “traveler”, but already from the 19th century.

Among modern films, one can note the work of Cronenberg's "Spider" with Ralph Fiennes. You will learn the story of Dennis Fleg, a man who spent 20 years in a mental hospital. Returning home after treatment, he wanders through the recesses of his mind, trying to remember what caused his madness.
