Starts the narration "Zeus's Will". At the council of the gods, Athena defends Odysseus before Zeus. The summary of the poem tells about his being at that time in captivity of Calypso burning with love and his suffering from the desire to see his native shores. Meanwhile, in his kingdom, he is considered already dead, and his wife Penelope is forced by the nobles to find a new husband and the island of the king. With the queen in Ithaca is her son Telemachus, but he is still young, so no one takes him seriously.

Athena appeared to the prince in the form of a wandering friend Odysseus. The brief summary of the adventure tells of her son's call to find his father, which was opposed by Penelope's potential suitors. Imperceptibly, Telemachus enters the ship and goes first to Nestor in Pylos. It turned out that the decrepit old man knows nothing about the fate of Odysseus. The prince goes to Helen and Menelaus in Sparta, where he learns that his father is alive and suffering on the island of Calypso.

With good news, Telemachus was about to return to Ithaca, but here the story about him is interrupted by Homer. The Odyssey continues with the story of the main character.

Athena was able to help - by order of Zeus, Hermes goes to Calypso on the coast, Odysseus is released from the island. He hastily builds a raft and makes his way to Ithaca. Poseidon (lord of the seas), angry at Odysseus for daring to blind his son Polyphemus (Cyclops), smashes the unsightly floating craft to smithereens. But Athena saves the hero again, helping him get to the coast alive. Odysseus is brought to his senses by the servant of Princess Sterchia of Nausicaa, who shows him the way to the capital.

Arriving at the palace, the protagonist of the poem prays to Alcinous, the ruler of the Feacians, and his wife Areta to help him return to his native land.

The king asks to tell about the experienced adventures of Odysseus. The summary of his journey includes a story about meetings with many amazing monsters and peoples, about kikons, distinguished by their vindictiveness, about lotophages who present dishes that make one forget about their native land, about cyclops, about the lord of the winds Eol, about cannibals, about Kirk, whose a magical drink turns people into animals. Further, Odysseus talks a lot more about the ghosts that live in the Land of Shadows, about the Sirens enchanting sailors with their singing, about the monster from the sea Scylla and Charybdis - terriblewhirlpool, about the cows of the Sun, about the nymph Calypso. The story went on almost until the next morning.

Homer sends Odysseus home, generously gifted with feacs, putting him on a fast ship. So the king of Ithaca returns to his homeland, which he has not seen for about 20 years. But here Odysseus is in danger - impudent suitors have planned to kill him. With the help of Athena and Telemachus, he overcomes all obstacles and is reunited with his wife. Peace and grace are restored to Ithaca.

The fabulous "Odyssey" strikes with its plot, atmosphere and mood. The summary is more reminiscent of a romantic story than an epic permeated with heroism. The protagonist performs feats not on the battlefield, but among monsters and wizards, so cunning and resourcefulness are no less important for him than courage and strength. Penelope, wife of Odysseus, shows heroic fortitude in the fight for her love and loy alty. Mama's son Telemachus grows up towards the end of the story. The gods of Odysseus are peaceful and majestic, Athena is especially charming. The finale of the poem is permeated with the triumph of justice.
