The Shostakovich Philharmonic (St. Petersburg) became the center of the city's musical life in the first half of the 19th century. Today you can listen to concerts, attend meetings and lectures here.

History

The Shostakovich Philharmonic (St. Petersburg) has existed since 1921. Its first director was conductor E. Cooper. In a very short time, the Philharmonic launched a large-scale activity.

The concert repertoire gradually expanded. At first, it included works of domestic and foreign classics. Then masterpieces of outstanding composers of the 20th century were added.

The Shostakovich Philharmonic today has not only the Great Hall, but also the Small Hall. It bears the name of Mikhail Glinka. This hall has a unique acoustics. The building in which it is located was built in the 18th century according to the project of B. Rastrelli. At first it was a mansion owned by princely families. Masquerades, balls and home concerts were held here. In the 19th century, the house was rebuilt, and Mrs. Engelhardt's music salon was opened in it. Famous composers, poets, musicians, actors and even the royal family were its visitors.

The Small Philharmonic Hall was opened here in 1949.

"Magic Airship" is a social project for orphans, boys and girls with disabilities, pupils of boarding schools and orphanages, as well as rehabilitation centers. As part of it, visiting master classes and classes are held for these children, which will allow them to get an idea of \u200b\u200blife, adapt in society, and develop their abilities.

Orchestras

The Philharmonic has two world-famous symphony orchestras. The first of them has existed since tsarist times. It was created in 1882 by decree of Emperor Alexander III. In 1917, the team received the status of the state. Today, the orchestra's repertoire includes not only classical music, but also works by contemporary composers. In 1934, the team was awarded the title"Deserved". The orchestra is among the twenty best in the world. From 1988 to this day, Yuri Temirkanov has been its chief conductor and artistic director.

The second symphony orchestra at the Philharmonic has existed since 1931. Its musicians worked for many years on the air of the Leningrad Radio. Their repertoire was varied. During the years of the blockade, the orchestra remained the only musical group that did not leave the city. From 1968 to 1977 Y. Temirkanov was its artistic director. From 1977 to the present day, the orchestra has been led by conductor Alexander Dmitriev.

Artistic Director

The Shostakovich Philharmonic today lives under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov. This is one of the best conductors in the world. While still a graduate student at the conservatory, he became the winner of the All-Union competition. And at the age of 29, he stood behind the console of his own symphony orchestra.

The best teams of the world cooperate with Yu. Temirkanov. Thanks to him, the revival of the Mariinsky Theater began, of which he was artistic director from 1976 to 1988.

Critics consider Yuri Temirkanov's orchestra one of the best in the world and a national treasure of our country.

In the very center of St. Petersburg there is the Shostakovich Philharmonic. The address of the Great Hall is Mikhailovskaya street, house number 2. The nearest metro station to it is Nevsky Prospekt. It's a 3 minute walk from the hall. The entrance to the Philharmonic is located from the side of the Arts Square. The Small Hall is located on Nevsky Prospekt, at number 30. The most convenient way to get there is by metro to the station of the same name.
