History of the collection: a gift from S. I. Shchukin

Sergei Ivanovich bought paintings fromthe artists themselves and the art dealers. The active and enterprising Shchukin was nicknamed by the latter "Porcupine" among themselves - for his intransigence in transactions.
Sergey Ivanovich often visited Paris, where he was able to purchase original paintings by Gauguin, Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh, Pissarro, Cezanne. It is known that panels by Matisse, Willard, Bonnard were painted by his order.
Sergei Ivanovich Shchukin made a will, according to which the collection of works of French artists he had collected was to go to St. Petersburg. There were 225 works in it!
History of the collection: a gift from I. A. Morozov
Ivan Abramovich Morozov began to collect his amazing collection, carried away by Russian painting. However, the connoisseur was also attracted by airy French impressionism. Surprisingly, his artistic tastes practically coincided with the preferences of Sergei Ivanovich Shchukin, even though Ivan Abramovich was 17 years younger. It is important to say that, replenishing their collections, the patrons were not guided by material considerations.
I. A. Morozov most appreciated the work of Bonnard - in his collection there are more than three dozen works by this master. He was also fond of the paintings of Denis, the paintings of Matisse, the Tahitian subjects of Gauguin, the works of Van Gogh. At the time the Bolsheviks came to power, his collection included 135 paintings and sculptures by French masters.
Soviet history
During the Soviet era, the Morozov and Shchukin collections were distributed between the Hermitage and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. However, the works of the Impressionists for many years were gathering dust in storage, as they were objectionable to the artistic views of socialism. Interest in them began to wake up only in the middle of the last century.
Today, the collection of Impressionist masters has taken its well-deserved place in the Hermitage - it is spread almost entirely on one of the museum's floors.
