History of the theater
It is generally accepted that the Samara Drama Theater has existed since 1851. It was then that the first professional permanent troupe appeared in the city. The first season was opened by the comedy The Inspector General. In 1888, a stone building was built for the theater on the banks of the Volga River, where the troupe “lives” to this day. The author of the project was the architect M. Chichagov.
In 1901, the premiere of a new play "Foma Gordeev" based on the play by the then young writer Maxim Gorky took place on the stage of the Samara theater. Previously, his plays have not been staged anywhere. Since then, the plays of M. Gorky have been constantly performed not only on the stage of the drama theater of the city of Samara, but also on the theatervenues around the world.
In 1926, the Samara Academic Drama Theater became a state theater. The repertoire has changed. Most of the performances were based on plays by Soviet playwrights.
The thirties of the 20th century were difficult for the theater. Directors changed very often. The actors didn't stay long. Maxim Gorky died in 1936. Then the theater was named after him.
During the war, the repertoire was special. Plays were put on. Actors as part of concert teams performed in hospitals in front of wounded soldiers, and also performed the duties of nannies and wrote letters for the wounded to their loved ones. On Victory Day, the theater gave the play “So It Will Be.”
In the 60s the troupe toured Moscow. Samara Drama brought ten of its best productions to the capital. The tour lasted 35 days. The most successful of the ten was the play "Richard III". The audience and critics were delighted with the artistic design of the production, as well as the ingenious play of the lead actor N. Zasukhin, who showed great talent to find so many shades of black.
In the 70s, several performances of the Samara theater were awarded state prizes. The play "Old Fashioned Comedy" was shown repeatedly on the Central Television of the country. In 1977, the theater began to be called academic.
In the 90s, the American director D. Kaplan worked with the troupe. He staged the drama "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare. The actress of the Samara theater V. Ershova at the end of the 20th century became the winner of the national award "Golden Mask".
In 1998 Samarathe theater toured France for a month.
