One of the masterpieces of Soviet cinema is Yevgeny Tashkov's film "His Excellency's Adjutant". For the first time, viewers saw the picture 48 years ago. Now it is called a Soviet action movie and a TV series at the same time. Although there were five episodes, they looked at one go. The actors of the film "His Excellency's Adjutant" became popular in an instant, especially the lead actor Yuri Solomin.
The film was decided to be released on the fiftieth anniversary of Soviet intelligence. Screenwriters Georgy Seversky, who once served in the Cheka (Extraordinary Commission) together with his colleague Igor Bolgarin, were ordered by the party to write a story about real events that happened to the Soviet intelligence officer Pavel Vasilyevich Makarov.
White Guards
For the first time on television, whites were shown without grotesque, asnormal people, and the actors of the film "His Excellency's Adjutant" were dressed in real, and not fake, uniforms of officers of the tsarist army. Before that, Soviet cinematography did not dare to truthfully reflect all the many faces of the civil war, all the blows of fate that affected both ordinary people and the war commanders. It was surprising, since the whole country was preparing next year to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the leader of the revolution, V. I. Lenin.
Almost half a century has passed since the creation of the picture, but still not everyone knows how much intrigue, secrets and drama the creators and actors of the film "His Excellency's Adjutant" had to overcome.
Director Evgeny Tashkov
The search for a director lasted a long time. Yevgeny Tashkov, who had previously directed the successful film Major Whirlwind, became the eighth director who was almost forced to make a film about a Soviet Chekist by force. Tashkov agreed only by setting his own conditions: the script needs to be rewritten.
The plot, the actors of the film "His Excellency's Adjutant" and the roles they got are a separate story that requires close attention.
The film was based on real events, but there was not enough topic for a sharp plot and we decided to add several historical events that took place then in Kyiv: the defeat of the nationalist center, the exposure of agent Basov, and so on. The surname of Makarov was changed to Koltsov and the director began to look for suitable actors for his film.
Actors and roles of the series"His Excellency's Adjutant"
The task was not easy. For the role of the protagonist, the director was offered Mikhail Nozhkin, who had already established himself as a scout Bekas in the film Resident's Mistake. Yuri Solomin was supposed to star in a small role as counterintelligence officer Osipov. Unexpectedly for everyone, the director decided to give the main role to the short and even frail Yuri Solomin.
The Art Council did not approve of Evgeny Tashkov's choice. Only thanks to the persistence of the director, after the sixth trial, Yuri Solomin was approved for the role of Koltsov. For the actor himself, this decision was unexpected.
In the theater he played character roles, but now he had to focus on the image of a serious person, focused on his mission.
The rest of the cast
Other actors of the film "His Excellency's Adjutant" - Tatyana Ivanitskaya, Viktor Pavlov, Vladislav Strzhelchik, Anatoly Papanov, Evgeny Shutov, Alexander Milokosty, Igor Starygin - also received star roles. So, Igor Starygin, who was very much in the White Guard uniform, was remembered in the role of Mickey, the charming junior adjutant of His Excellency.
Viktor Pavlov was originally approved for the role of Osipov, a Red Army soldier, and unexpectedly received the role of Miron Osadchy. The actor who portrayed Miron did not come to the shooting and Viktor Pavlov, replacing him, so heartfeltly declared his love to Xenia (Lyudmila Chursina) and talked about his life that the entire cinematographic group sobbed. After this sceneOsadchy went to Viktor Pavlov.
Tatyana Schukina - Pavel Koltsov's love
Tatyana Ivanitskaya, who played Pavel Koltsov's girlfriend, was twenty-one years old at the time of filming. She was, by her own account, an unkissed, chaste girl. Apparently, therefore, the kissing scenes were excruciatingly difficult for her. It became known that Yevgeny Tashkov shot the only "bed" scene, very innocent, compared to what is being filmed now, but it was cut out.
Tatyana Ivanitskaya was not a professional actress, before the film she danced in the ballet of the Russian Folk Choir, so the director's proposal came as a complete surprise to her. For the role of Tatyana Shchukina, the daughter of the white counterintelligence officer Shchukin, several fairly recognizable actresses auditioned. However, the director liked Ivanitskaya for her chastity and purity.
For the actors who played in the film "His Excellency's Adjutant", Tatyana Ivanitskaya and Alexander Milokosty, this picture became almost the only one in their film career. Ivanitskaya returned to ballet, at the same time she graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Theater Organization. She was Assistant to the President of the International Association of Musicians.
The rest of the actors and roles of the film "His Excellency's Adjutant"
Alexander Milokosty, at the age of thirteen, played Yura Lvov - a boy who suddenly lost everything - with such anguish that he was no different from professional actors. The actor is doing wellstarred in the popular action movie "The Headless Horseman", and the rest of his roles in the films "Iron Island", "Granite Islands" went unnoticed.
All the actors of the film "His Excellency's Adjutant" played in such a way that it was impossible to imagine someone else in their place. Anatoly Papanov, as the well-worn Old Man Angel, the Ukrainian ataman who led the insurgent movement, persuades the Reds and Whites to join his bandit group with such humor that it is impossible to imagine a young man in his place, which was the leader of the gang Evgeny Petrovich Angel.
Vladislav Strzhelchik in the role of Kovalevsky even outwardly resembles the true commander of the Volunteer Army, General Vladimir Zenonovich Mai-Maevsky. The images of counterintelligence colonel Shchukin and his daughter Tatyana are also not fictional.
Movie plot
According to the plot, the Red scout miraculously gets to the headquarters of General Kovalevsky and becomes his adjutant. He is trusted, especially by Colonel Lvov (Yura's father), who, together with others, avoids a humiliating death in the captivity of Angel's gang.
Pavel Koltsov, putting himself in jeopardy, risking his life, wraps around the finger of the White Guard counterintelligence. He actively conducts sabotage work, and only the attentive Yura Lvov understands that Koltsov serves as a Red. To the boy's direct question whether he is a spy, Pavel Andreevich also directly gives him an answer and substantiates it.
At the end of the fifth episode, Captain Koltsov does a heroic deed, knowing that he will be shot for it - he derails a train with English tanks that were intended to capture Moscow. Koltsov is exposed and the White Guard tribunal issues a verdict: shoot him.
According to the picture, Koltsov dies a heroic death. In reality, the prototype of the captain, Pavel Vasilievich Makarov, lived until the seventies of the last century, saw the film and, apparently, he liked it.
Conclusion
The film "His Excellency's Adjutant", photos of the actors and the roles they played can be found in this article. This film has become a kind of hymn to the White Guards. The film authorities did not want to show it on a wide screen and have already put it on the shelf. Director Yevgeny Tashkov, who put so much effort into making the film, went to see liberal-minded Deputy Chairman of the State Security Committee Semyon Tsvigun.
The leading bodies of the KGB liked the film and a document came from them stating that they had no complaints about the film. After a while, the whole country was watching Captain Koltsov and other heroes of the tape with bated breath.
