It was 1997. Princess Diana died in a car accident. The American rover reached its goal and landed on the planet, the path to which was long and difficult. And the Aqua group, consisting of Danes and Norwegians, released the single Barbie girl. This disc was the biggest success in the career of the musical group.

The group owes much of its popularity to the artistry and original vocal style of soloist Lena Nystrom. The song reached number seven on the Billboard charts. To this day, Aqua remains the most successful Danish music group of all time.

Biography

Lene Gravford Nystrom was born on October 2, 1973 in the Norwegian city of Tensberg. This settlement is the center of an area called Vestfold. It is located in the north of Norway, 102 kilometers from Oslo. Many historians call this city the most ancient in the country. It was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century AD.

The girl's father made sure that the child spent as much time as possible in nature. At his insistence, Lene went in for many sports.

As is often the case, as a teenager, Nystrom became interested in music and began to study vocals. Later she tried herself in the modeling business. But also the girl had to work as a waitress.

First steps in show business

In 1990, Lene Nystrom was invited to Norwegian television. She was offered to become the host of the show "Casino". She worked in this program for three years.

When the TV show "Casino" ceased to exist, the heroine of this article remembered her old dream - to become a vocalist. She got a job singing in the restaurant of one of the large ships that cruised the Mediterranean. There she met Dane Rene Dief, who later invited the girl to participate in his group called "Aqua".

Fateful meeting

Rene Dief, future colleague of Lena Nystrom in the group, did not differ in exemplary behavior in childhood. He also did not like studying at school, and he was expelled several times for poor progress. After leaving the walls of the hated institution, he changed several jobs before ending up on the same ship as the person under study.

Aqua

Besides Lene Nyström (the photo of the singer is presented in the article) and Difa, the group included two more members: Seren Rasted and Klaus Norrin. It's interesting thatbefore joining the singer, the team had existed for several years. It was formed in 1989. The team of three even managed to win a competition to write music for a Danish children's film called Brave Frida and the Fearless Spies.

The popularity of this picture did not spread beyond the country where it was filmed. Nevertheless, the band members gained valuable experience in writing musical compositions and became professionals in their field.

Another interesting fact from the biography of Lena Nystrem is the history of the name of the band, participation in which made her famous all over the world. The original team name was Joyspeed. When the heroine of this article joined the guys, it was decided to change it to a more concise and bright one - "Aqua".

The band members themselves say that they came up with this idea after seeing this word written on the aquarium.

Style

Recalling their childhood in the 1970s, Lena Nystrom and the other members of Aqua spoke enthusiastically about the music for teenagers that existed then. The bubblegum pop genre, oriented mainly to the youth audience, was very popular at that time. Usually such music was distinguished by rhythm. The songs were created at an accelerated pace, and their production was "put on the assembly line".

But sometimes this purely commercial approach gave great results. Among the most popular bubblegum performers are the following groups: 1910Fruit Gum Company, The Lemon Pipers, The Ohio Express and The Archies. The second round of popularity of this style came at the end of the seventies, when it mixed with disco that appeared then. But by the start of the next decade, music for teenagers was practically disappearing from record stores.

The revival of the genre

The members of the Danish-Norwegian team remembered the undeservedly forgotten style. In their work, he acquired a new, fresh sound, mixing with the newfangled Eurodance.

Barbie song

The main focus of the group was on the release of singles, since this format is best perceived by children and teenagers. In this, the team has been very successful. "Aqua" got into the Guinness Book of Records as the only group whose first three songs hit the first places of the hit parade.

With the debut single of Barbie girl there was an unforeseen incident. The creator of the famous toy did not like the text of the composition performed by Lena Nystrem. He sued the authors of the work. However, experts considered the lyrics of the song to be ironic, containing an element of parody. And since freedom of speech is a universally recognized value and is protected by law in Europe and America, the claim to the creator of Barbie was denied.

Besides singles, the band released two albums. It broke up in 2001.

Solo album

In 2003, Lene Nystrom released her only solo disc to date. The songs presented on it are designed in eurodance and disco styles.

Reunion

In the fall of 2007, the band members decided to revive the band. The following summer they toured Denmark with great success. A few months later, the single Back to the 80th was recorded. It was followed by a new, third album, Megalomania.

Private life

Lene Nyström and Søren Rasted (one of the Aqua members) got married in 2001. In this marriage, two children were born. But in 2017, the couple divorced.
