This is not the first time in the literature that the topic of the double has been addressed. R. L. also wrote about this. Stevenson, who has "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", and E. Schwartz with the "Shadow" story. You can make a long list. But now we will present the story "Lieutenant Kizhe". A summary of the chapters will allow you to get acquainted with the absurd nature of Emperor Paul I.

Chapter One

The Emperor was dozing, sitting by the open window. After dinner, he had an unpleasant dream. Actually, he was bored. Caught a fly out of boredom. Someone under the window shouted: "Sentry".

Chapter Two

A young clerk was writing an order in the office. His predecessor was exiled to Siberia. The young man was worried and made mistake after mistake, rewriting the document again. If he fails to meet the deadline, he will be arrested. When he got to the phrase "Second Lieutenants Steven, etc.," an officer came in. The clerk put off workwithout completing the full word. He stopped at "lieutenant" and stretched out in front of him, and then sat down and wrote "lieutenant Kizhe, Stephen, etc.", in the same order he made another mistake: he wrote down lieutenant Sinyukhaev as dead. There were ten minutes left before the order was given. The young man began to look for a clean sheet. And suddenly he stopped. Another order, equally important, was misspelled. Order No. 940 said which words could and could not be used. The clerk immediately forgot about the mistake in the order and sat down to correct the report. To the messenger who arrived from the adjutant, he passed the order with two errors with Sinyukhaev, whom he wrote down as dead, and the invented lieutenant Kizhe. Then he continued, trembling, to write. This is how the story "Lieutenant Kizhe" begins, the summary of which is presented.

Chapter Three

Adjutant at the usual time arrived at the emperor with documents. Pavel still sat at the window with his back to the newcomer. He was angry. All yesterday they searched and failed to find the one who shouted under the window "Help". This was a violation of the established order once and for all and meant that anyone who wants to hooligan can and will not be punished. The number of guards should have been increased. Here are the trimmed bushes, and no one knows who is hiding in them.

Without looking at the adjutant, the emperor extended his hand and began to carefully read the documents enclosed in it.

Then Pavel Petrovich again extended his hand, into which they carefully put the pen. The signed sheet flew to the subordinate. This continued until the sovereign had studied all the documents. Suddenlythe emperor jumped up to him, scolded him for not knowing the service and coming from behind, promised to knock out the spirit of Potemkin and let his subordinate go. He would develop great anger.

Chapter four and five (the fate of Kizhe and Sinyukhaev)

The commander of the Preobrazhensky regiment was in disarray when he received an order from the emperor demanding that Lieutenant Kizhe be sent on guard. How much he did not remember, but could not remember who Lieutenant Kizhe was. Looked through the list of officers. It didn't have one like that. The commander, in dismay, rushed to the adjutant, but he grimaced in disgust, ordered not to report to the emperor, but to send the lieutenant to guard.

When the seedy lieutenant Sinyukhaev stood in the ranks, he was horrified to hear the words of the order that he should be considered dead and retired from service. Everything in Sinyukhaev's head went haywire. After all, he is alive, holding the hilt of a sword, he even considered that by some mistake he was alive. Sinyukhaev stood like a pillar and did not move and spoiled the whole view. The commander rushed at him, wanted to shout, but remembered that Sinyukhaev was not there, and, not knowing what to say, silently walked away. We continue to read Tynyanov's short work "Lieutenant Kizhe". It won't take long to retell.

Chapter Six - Emperor

Pavel Petrovich was not just angry, but great. He walked around the rooms and looked at the gifts of the French royal couple, already beheaded. He did not touch them. He ordered to destroy the things of his mother, the thief of his throne, but her spirit still remained.

But fear was in him. He wasn't afraidno one individually, but together all these courtiers, sons and dark people of his vast empire, whom he did not represent, caused horror. And when the anger ended and turned into fear, the office of criminal cases and the shoulder cases of the master began to work. And so his entourage was also in fear.

Chapter seven and eight - the unfortunate Sinyukhaev and Lieutenant Kizhe

Lieutenant Sikhyunaev looked around the large square on which he stood, remembered what he usually did both in the evenings and before going to bed, how calmly and freely he lived, and clearly understood that he had died: he had nothing never will.

And the adjutant came to Pavel Petrovich and reported that they had found out: "Sentry" shouted Lieutenant Kizhe. And he screamed out of ignorance. The emperor ordered an interrogation, whipping and sending to Siberia.

The absurdity with the second lieutenant - Chapter Nine

The culprit of the sovereign's fear, necessary for the efficient adjutant, was found. He must now be sent to lawyers, and then to Siberia. In the regiment, in front of the formation, there was a horse on which the second lieutenant was to be taken away. The commander called out his name.

No one came out, and the regiment left after seeing how the empty place was whipped. Only a young soldier could not forget this until nightfall. He even asked the veteran about what happened to the emperor. After a pause, the veteran said that he had been switched.

Chapter Ten

Former Sinyukhaev returned to the barracks. He examined the room in which he lived and which now did not belong to him. By evening, a young man moved in. On Sinyukhaev, he does not evenwatched. This new tenant made instructions to the orderly and began to go to bed. And Sinyukhaev, having changed into an old uniform, left on himself only new gloves, since he had heard that gloves meant that he was still a lieutenant, and went to wander around Petersburg at night. He dozed, sat down on the ground, and left the city. He never returned to the barracks again.

Yuri Tynyanov shows such a meaningless life under Emperor Paul.

Chapter Eleven

The news that a man shouting "Help" was found made an impression on the women's part of the palace. One of the young ladies-in-waiting fainted. It was to her that a pleasant young man was supposed to come, and she pressed her nose to the window, depicting a snub-nosed emperor nearby. Then the young man shouted, and now he is being sent to Siberia. The young maid of honor told Nelidova about her grief. She promised to come up with something and turned for help to a powerful person at the court. He replied with a note not to worry, but he himself did not know what to do yet.

Chapters Twelve and Thirteen

Meanwhile, the guards were leading "it", as they called it, deep into the empire along the Vladimir highway and realized that they were leading an important criminal. An order flew after them. The emperor's fear turned into pity, first for himself, a rootless man who was abandoned by his mother and who had an unknown father. He vaguely heard about it. He traveled around this huge silent country, drank water from the Volga, sullenly asked the peasants why they were looking at him. And everything around him was empty. He didn't go anywhere else. All around was emptiness and treason. When hethe dignitary reported the incident with the cry of "guard", the emperor cheered up and ordered the return of the second lieutenant and marry that lady-in-waiting.

Chapter fourteen and fifteen

Sinyukhaev came on foot to Gatchina to see his father, a doctor. He told his story, and he was embarrassed to keep him at home and put him in the hospital and put up a sign "Accidental death." But he went with a petition to Arakcheev. The baron listened absently to the old man, asked where the dead man had been for two days, and let him go with nothing. He reported to the emperor that Sinyukhaev was alive. However, Pavel imposed a resolution that Sinyukhaev should be excluded from the lists of the regiment due to death. The baron personally went to the hospital and ordered that Sinyukhaev's uniform be taken away from him and driven out of the ward.

Chapter Seventeen

Returning from exile, Lieutenant Kizhe regularly serves, goes on guard duty and on duty. He even gets married. The maid of honor, when she noticed that in the church the adjutant was holding a crown over an empty place, almost fainted, but lowering her eyes and paying attention to her rounded tummy, she changed her mind. The wedding took place successfully. The groom was not present, and many liked this mystery. Soon Kizhe had a son. There were rumors that he looked like him. The emperor completely forgot about Kizh. But once, going through the regimental lists, he came across his name and appointed him a captain, and then a colonel, because he was a good officer. He now commanded a regiment. Everyone is used to the fact that he is often not in place. The wife was the best. Her lonely life was brightened up by meetings with military and civilians, and her son was growing up. This is how the life of a successful officer changed instory written by Tynyanov, "Lieutenant Kizhe".

Chapter Eighteen and Nineteen

Lieutenant Sinyukhaev wandered through the Chukhonian villages and did not look into anyone's eyes. A year later, he returned to St. Petersburg and began to wander around in circles.

The shopkeepers thought he was bad luck and chased him away. The women, in order to pay off him, gave kalach. Rumors circulated around the city that the sovereign would soon end. People whispered about it both in the streets and in the palace. Pavel Petrovich was also afraid. He changed rooms and did not know where to hide, even in a snuffbox, the emperor dreamed. And I decided to bring a simple person closer to me.

Chapter Twenty

Resigned, who did not climb into the eyes, Kizhe was suddenly promoted to general. The emperor recalled with a smile a love story with a cry of "guard", smiled and decided that right now a person was needed who would scream at the right moment. He granted the general 1,000 souls and an estate. They started talking about him. The emperor did not order to give him a division, he will be needed for more important matters. Everyone began to recall his family tree and decided that he was from France. So continues the story of Yu. N. Tynyanov "Lieutenant Kizhe".

Chapter twenty-one and twenty-two

When the general was called to the emperor, it was said that he was ill. Pavel demanded to be admitted to the hospital and cured. But the general died three days later.

His funeral was remembered for a long time. A regiment was walking and carrying folded banners, behind the coffin, leading the child behindhand, the widow was walking. Pavel Petrovich looked out of the window at the procession and dropped: “This is how the glory of the world passes.”

Last chapter

So the life of the general went on, filled with love adventures and youth, disgrace and mercy of the emperor, envy of the courtiers. She had everything. And the name of Sinyukhaev is forgotten, he disappeared, as if he did not exist at all. The emperor died, according to rumors, of apoplexy in March of the same year as General Kizhe. Thus ends the story "Lieutenant Kizhe". The summary does not convey the charm of the author's speech. Also, unfortunately, it does not give a sense of the historical atmosphere.

The book "Lieutenant Kizhe" was filmed. The music for the film was written by S. Prokofiev. He reworked it into a suite, based on which the ballet of the same name was staged.
