When the hymn writer Sergei Mikhalkov asked him, trying to confuse him, how dare he write "for Stalin", Anatoly Naumovich Rybakov replied that for him the reference point was Leo Tolstoy, who was not afraid to write about Napoleon. He considered writing the tetralogy "Children of the Arbat" the work of his life.
The writer already had a number of works that brought him the love of a domestic reader, awards from the USSR and the RSFSR. Among them are the familiar trilogy of stories "Krosh's Vacation", the stories "Dagger", "Bronze Bird", "Shot". This article is about one of his stories for youth. We present to you its summary. The Bronze Bird is a five-part story.
Pioneer camp at the castle of Count Karagaev
Komsomol member Misha Polyakov came to lead a pioneer detachment, which became a camp near the former estate of Count Karagaev. The purpose of the detachment was to fight illiteracy in the neighboring village and create a pioneer link there. The children interacted with local children. Most friendlythere was their relationship with Vasya Rybalin, (by the street nickname Longshanks). Longshanks' brother, Nikolay, helped the pioneers to equip the village club.
Soon an incident happened: the pioneers Igor and Seva fled. The fugitives were teased by Genk Petrov. The instigator was sent to Moscow, to their parents.
The author of the story "The Bronze Bird" does not skimp on the dynamism of the plot. Summary (Rybakova is not constrained by the scope of the genre) of this story is worthy of a whole novel.
Judge for yourself. Nicholas is in trouble. He agreed to meet with Kuzmin, a former forester from Karagaev, to cross in a boat to Khalzin meadow. But he was shot. Nikolai was detained while investigating the crime.
Having learned that in the village a raft had been stolen from the local kulak Erofeev, Misha and his wards, as well as Vaska Longshanks, went after the fugitives. Like it or not, the story "The Bronze Bird" (its summary is an investigation conducted by boys) takes on the features of a thriller. Move on. From the anarchist artist Kondraty Stepanovich, the guys learned that the housekeeper Sofya Pavlovna and the boatman were looking for the count's treasure together. And here the plot, in the words of modern youth, ceases to be languid.
Treasure Hunt
They even tried to discourage the curious pioneers from the investigation. They received an official letter, signed by the same Serov, - to leave the territory adjacent to the castle. Yes, Rybakov does not tell us about the fairy-tale world, which is confirmed by the summary. "Bronze Bird" tells about the aspiration of childrenbring the scoundrels to clean water, save Nikolai, while the investigator point-blank does not want to notice the obvious truths. A well-known recidivist thief, a specialist in currency and jewelry (which turned out to be a boatman), he considers incapable of murder. Looking ahead, let's say that Serov was subsequently exposed as a bribe taker.
Misha and Slava in the museum examined a bronze figure of a bird similar to the one seen in the castle hall. The guys suspected the presence of a hiding place in it, because the countess, having entered the museum, was right next to her. And the boys began to follow. Two days later, a tall, limping man entered the museum and, pressing on the eyes of the bronze statue, opened the cache, after which he put a note there. After he left, the guys took out a piece of paper saying that the stranger would come to the castle next Wednesday.
The secret of the treasure of Count Karagaev
As we remember, there was also a bronze figurine of a bird in the castle. And, as the summary hints to us, the bronze bird in the hall was also a cache, and it contained a treasure map, which turned out to be misinformation. Realizing that a fake card would not help, Misha and friends undertook, as they say now, "brainstorming". Obviously, Karagaev Jr. killed the former count's forester Kuzmin, who knew the place on the mound near the Khalzan River, where the treasure was hidden, but did not inform the count's son about it.
The ingenious guess of the pioneers crowns the summary. The Bronze Bird brings the reader to the moment of truth, the time for decisive action. Looking for guysFinally, the director of the orphanage became interested. Misha and his friends invited him, the chairman of the village council and the investigator to go to the mound, where a brooch sparkling with precious stones was found in a box. Karagaev Jr. tried to take possession of her, threatening with a gun, but he was detained.
The story ends with the fact that the pioneers go home, and the pupils of the labor colony moved into the former count's castle.
Instead of afterword
The Soviet "thriller" we are considering about the youth of the 1920s, written by a talented author, was a resounding success. In addition, it was filmed, and the film turned out to be no worse than the story. It remains only to wish our readers to find time and get acquainted with the work of A. Rybakov closer.
