Jacob is one of the most popular characters in the Twilight Saga, created by writer Stephanie Meyer. He takes part in all four books of the series and is a witness to most of the main events. In the adaptation of the novels, the role of Jacob Black (real name Jacob Billy Black) was played by American actor Taylor Lautner.

History of Creation

Stephanie Meyer has repeatedly stated that Jacob Black was originally conceived as a minor character. It was from him that Bella was supposed to learn the main secret of Edward Cullen. A little later, Mayer herself, as well as her agent and editor, decided to make Black one of the key characters.

Through her official website, the writer talked about how the original text of the first book ruled after working on New Moon. The revelation of the character's identity in the sequel also influenced his backstory.

The role of the character in "Twilight"

In the first novelJacob played a rather small role. His father, Bill Black, is a good friend of Bella's father, thanks to which the main characters met. In the story, Swan is trying to get information about the Cullen family out of Jacob. Then the guy shares with her the legends of the Quileutes and hints at the vampire origin of Edward. Jacob then begins to develop romantic feelings for Bella.

Appearing in "New Moon"

Jacob Black appears more frequently in the Twilight sequel. One of the key story arcs of the second book is his friendship with Bella. The latter, in turn, is trying to forget herself after breaking up with her beloved Edward.

In New Moon, readers are introduced to Jacob's true origins - in fact, he belongs to an ancient species of werewolves who are in a blood feud with vampires. The first transformation causes the hero to move away from Bella. He begins to master his unique abilities and tries to adapt to a new life. On top of that, werewolves are forbidden from revealing their essence to other people, which is why Jacob is trying to suppress his love for Swan.

The heroes reconnect after Bella is put in mortal danger several times. Jacob manages to save his beloved, after which he finally reveals his big secret. When the girl leaves for Italy to save Edward, Black begins to feel burning jealousy. He betrays Bella to her father, and also reminds Cullen of the seriousness of the pact between vampires and werewolves.

Continuation of the story: "Eclipse"

It seems that Bella has made her choice and wants to turn into a vampire, but Jacob does not like this decision. He also believes that the girl really loves him, not Cullen, but is not yet ready to admit her feelings.

In parallel with the internal drama in the relationship, a more serious conflict is brewing - newborn vampires, led by Victoria. The werewolves decide to team up with the Cullen family to fight back the impending threat. Before the battle, Jacob learns about Bella and Edward's upcoming wedding. He tells the girl that in this case he is not afraid of death and that it is better for him not to return. Then Bella tries to convince Jacob to stay and not go to battle, she even allows him to kiss her, but to no avail.

At the end of the book, Black survives, but is seriously injured and takes a long time to heal. Bella is not going to leave Edward and is ready for the wedding. She informs Jacob of her decision, and he, in turn, says that he will not stop loving her and waiting.

The end of the saga: "Breaking Dawn"

In the finale of "Eclipse", Jacob hides in an unknown direction, leaving his family and friends behind. "Breaking Dawn" begins with Bella and Edward's wedding, where many guests come. Among them is Jacob, who almost loses control after the news of the "real" honeymoon of the newlyweds.

As a result, the girl becomes pregnant. Black startshate the fetus as Bella's condition rapidly deteriorates. The werewolves suspect that the Cullens' unborn child is an unknown and dangerous creature that must be destroyed before it is born. Jacob is not ready to betray his beloved, so he goes over to the side of the vampires and forms a new flock, ready to protect the mother and her child.

A girl is born, and Bella's condition reaches a critical point. She is turned into a vampire, but she refuses to show any signs of life. When Jacob decides to kill the newborn, they are "imprinted". At the same time, Bella wakes up, and the whole family begins to prepare for the arrival of the Volturi.

The two packs, led by Jacob and Sam, team up with the Cullens for a final showdown with the ancient vampires. After some events, the Volturi decide to back off and leave Bella and Edward's child, Renesmee, alive. Then Jacob and the rest of the heroes learn that the girl will forever remain young and will never know death. Black cannot resist being "imprinted" and begins to take care of Renesmee, wishing her only happiness.
