Anyone who was born in the USSR is probably familiar with such characters as Cheburashka and Gena the crocodile. They first appeared in Eduard Uspensky's story "Gena the Crocodile and His Friends", created in 1966. Later, on the basis of this story, the famous cartoons directed by Roman Kachanov were shot.
Short biography of the author
Eduard Uspensky was born on December 22, 1937 in the small town of Yegorievsk, Moscow Region. He received his higher education after graduating from the Moscow Aviation Institute with a degree in engineering.
The story of the crocodile Gena and his friends - Cheburashka, the lion Chandra, the old woman Shapoklyak and others - became the official debut in Uspensky's literary career. Prior to that, he also wrote scripts for cartoons.
Then other publications followed: “Uncle Fyodor, Dog and Cat”, “Clown School”, “25 professions of Masha Filipenko”. Today, these works are considered practically classics of children's literature: more than one generation of young readers grew up on them.

Characters
The main character, whose name became the title of the story, is the crocodile Gena himself. This is a good-natured and sympathetic crocodile living in a zoo. He wears a red jacket, tie and hat.
Gena the crocodile's best friend is Cheburashka. He looks like a creature resembling a small bear with big ears. It is not known who Cheburashka really is - initially they wanted to attach him to the zoo, but later the unusual animal ended up in a discount store, where he met Gena.
The main antagonist is the old woman Shapoklyak, who constantly annoys other heroes with her cruel pranks.
Other characters appearing in the story and cartoons - the lion Chandr, the pioneers Galya, Dima and Marusya, the crocodile Valera, the giraffe Anyuta, the puppy Tobik.
Continuation of the story
In 1970-2001, Ouspensky created several works that continued the story of the crocodile Gena and other characters from the original story.
In subsequent stories, already familiar characters find themselves in new funny situations. For example, according to the plot "Gena the Crocodile - Police Lieutenant", Gena enters the police service, fights criminals and receives the rank of lieutenant.
