It is gratifying to see that in addition to political, religious and traditional holidays, there is a place in our life for those significant dates that are associated with art. Among such events, it is worth highlighting International Cinema Day, which is traditionally celebrated on December 28.
The history of the holiday goes back to 1895. It was then, on the evening of December 28, that the film premiere took place in Paris. In the Grand Café, the Lumiere brothers, already famous at that time, presented the Cinematograph apparatus patented by them. With his help, a short film was shown to the public. It is worth noting that very few people gathered on the first Cinema Day to watch the emergence of a new art form. Perhaps the film itself was uninteresting (it was called “Exit of the Workers from the Lumiere Factory”), or the brothers themselves did not inspire confidence in the public. Nevertheless, it was they who gave impetus to the development of a new kind of art, which today is shown on plasma panels in the widest color range, sometimes inaccessible to human eyes.
This picture was followed by the next“Arrival of the train at La Ciotat Station.” During this short silent film, the audience left their seats in a panic. They believed that the approaching train was real and could destroy everything in the area. This is how the Cinema Day was remembered by those citizens who decided to be the first to know this genre. Soon, short scenes, the duration of which was several minutes, scattered throughout Europe. Cinema came to Russia in 1908. Then in St. Petersburg, the picture "Ponizovaya freemen" was filmed, which lasted 7 minutes.
Gradually, the quality of the film produced and the equipment used to make films grew. By the 1920s, silent cinema had reached the apotheosis of its development. We can say with full confidence that at that time the cinema captured the whole world: narrative films were shown in Europe, in Russia and in America. Around that time, people began to celebrate Cinema Day. It was the most significant date for directors, actors and fans of the new art form. Movie theaters were built at great speed, and city dwellers began to go to them in droves.
In our country, the situation with the celebration has developed somewhat differently. For ideological reasons, the country's leadership decided that Soviet cinema cannot celebrate its main holiday on an equal footing with all other countries. In 1979, it was decided that the Day of Russian Cinema would henceforth fall on August 27. Since then, all domestic actors, directors and their fans have paid tribute to cinema on this very day.
In the world, among the numerous nominations, parties in honor of premieres and other events, Cinema Day is also celebrated. 2013 was no exception, and a lavish festival was held in Hollywood, as well as in cities where the film industry has developed. There are no nominees and winners for such an event. Everyone gathers here just to remember how the first silent film was born, which gave rise to the greatest dream factory and a new art form.
