Director Paul Anderson became known to the general public after such legendary films in the fantasy genre as "Shopping", "Resident Evil", "Pompeii", "Soldier" and "Alien vs. Predator". In the list of works of this master of shooting fantastic thrillers and horrors, there is another quite interesting film called Event Horizon. In the story, a doctor named William Weir, along with the brave crew of the Lewis and Clark ship, goes to the planet Neptune, since it was from there that the SOS signal was received from the second ship, called Event Horizon.

Weir is a scientist, designer and doctoral physicist who was once involved in the development of a secret project. A few years earlier, scientists had been challenged by the government to create a spacecraft that would be capable of flying very impressive distances while still traveling faster than the speed of light. According to the doctor, such a ship was created and named Event Horizon, which means "Through the Horizon".

For a long time he was considered missing, and only 7 years after the last flight, a distress signal was recorded from him.

The crew members, led by Captain Miller, are skeptical of the Weyr story and do not quite trust him, because they believe that the speed of light, according to the theory of relativity, cannot be exceeded. But the doctor-physicist throughout the expedition inexorably continued to insist on his own. Weir explained such an incredible, at first glance, possibility by the fact that the ship created with his participation had an engine that artificially created a black hole. The ship used its enormous energy to change time and space in such a way that the final and starting points of the ship's journey coincided when superimposed on each other. Thus, according to the doctor, a spatial tunnel is being formed, passing through which the Event Horizon ship could instantly move to any point in the Universe. During one of these transfers to a planet called Proxima Centauriship missing.

Horror scenes

The plot of Event Horizon acquires special tension after the heroes arrive at Neptune and find the lost ship. It turns out that his entire crew disappeared without a trace, and only a mutilated corpse and bloody footprints remained on board. Tensions escalate further after a breakdown occurs aboard the Lewis and Clark ship, and Captain Miller finds himself in a situation that forces him to temporarily place his crew aboard the strange, abandoned, and terrifying Event Horizon. Forced to be on board the found ship, crew members begin to see strange and creepy things.

For example, one of the lieutenants imagines a son who has bloodied pieces of meat covered with bleeding wounds instead of legs.

Captain Miller is haunted by his dead friend, whom he once doomed to death, leaving him on the burning ship "Goliath". The Weyr begins to be haunted by his late wife, who committed suicide many years ago and calls him to her all the time. These horrific scenes are just the beginning of the nightmare the crew is about to endure.

Accusations of screenwriters of excessive naturalism

After the release of the film, many viewers who are not fans of the horror and fantasy genre were outraged by the scenes of violence shown below. According to some, they were shot too naturally. According to the plot of the film, after the first terrifying visions, the crew manages to find out the truth - the ship that disappeared 7 years ago, having openedspace-time tunnel, fell into a completely different universe, which was something similar to Christian hell.

Video footage found on the ship has shown the missing Event Horizon crew members to have gone berserk, participating in chilling torture, violent orgies and cannibalism. At the same time, the found ship itself is gradually turning into a conscious and thinking being, which does not intend to let the expedition that arrived on the Lewis and Clark go back.

First under the massacre of the ship falls a female Lieutenant Pitters. Constant visions of her son lead her into a planned trap. After Weir finds her corpse, the doctor is visited by the ghost of his dead wife, which drives him completely insane. Being in a state of madness, in order to no longer see the nightmare surrounding him, he gouges out his own eyes. Completely losing control of himself, the doctor blows up the Lewis and Clark ship, thus depriving all the other crew members of the opportunity to escape. Continuing his madness, Weir cuts open the first mate, DJ, alive.

Reaffirming its direct connection to the horror film genre, this film is indeed full of naturalistically filmed scenes of violence. It is for this reason that it will be quite difficult for people who are not fans of this genre to watch the tape.

At one time, director Paul Andersen even had to cut about 20 minutes from the total time of the film, whichoccupied by too explicit scenes of violence. Otherwise, the film simply might not have made it to the wide screen and not received an R rating.

The role of Captain Miller went to a man who gained wide fame and recognition a few years later, in 1999, after his legendary performance in The Matrix. Everyone knows him as Morpheus. Dr. Weir was portrayed quite strongly by New Zealand actor Sam Neill.

For objectivity, it is worth saying that the role that Neill got is one of the most difficult, since it was his character who was obsessed with the ship, in the development of which he himself took part. The film Event Horizon, the full version of which never hit the wide screen, because it contained too explicit scenes of violence, was presented to the audience on 1997-15-08. Global fees fromthe screenings of this tape collected a very considerable amount - 47 million dollars.

The timing of the film was quite tight - all the material was filmed in almost 4 months, from November 1996 to March 1997. But at the same time, preliminary preparation for filming the film and building all the necessary scenery took about 1 month.

Regarding the scenery, it is also necessary to mention a well-known fact. During the construction of the spaceship, on which all the main events of the tape took place, drawings of the world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral were taken as a basis.

Voiceover and editing took place in the UK. It is also worth noting that Anderson originally intended to release a soundtrack for the film performed by the well-known band Orbital, which plays music in techno and electro styles. But for some personal reason, the management of the film studio opposed this idea, and as a result, the music for the tape was recorded as a kind of mix (techno and orchestral music). All themes are performed by Orbital in collaboration with Michael Kamen.

After the release of the film, information appeared that the spacesuit suits that the actors wore during filming weighed almost 25 kg. An interesting fact is that if you look very closely at these spacesuits, you can see on each of them a small flag of the country from which a particular character comes from.
